Chapter 8 - Steel and Tarmac

The Gulfstream G550’s twin jet engines whined into a high-pitched roar, blowing plumes of exhaust through the damp midnight air of Le Bourget.
Inside the cabin, Derek was anxiously pacing the aisle, clutching a leather briefcase containing three false passports and two encrypted hardware wallets. His mother, Evelyn, sat strapped in a cream leather seat, gulping scotch straight from a miniature bottle.
""Why aren't we moving?"" Evelyn panicked, her voice high and shrill. ""The pilot said we were cleared for Geneva ten minutes ago!""
""Air traffic control has a temporary ground stop,"" Derek snapped, peeking through the oval window. ""It’s nothing. Some bureaucratic glitch.""
Suddenly, three black SUVs crashed through the perimeter security gates of Hangar 4, tires screeching across the tarmac. They accelerated directly toward the Gulfstream, cutting across the taxiway and skidding to a halt mere feet in front of the aircraft’s nose gear, completely blocking its taxi line.
""What the hell is that?!"" Derek screamed, dropping his briefcase.
The airstair door of the jet was forced open from the outside by airport tactical police. Behind them walked Pierce Sterling, impeccably composed, followed by Claire carrying baby Leo.
Derek backed down the aisle until his spine hit the bulkhead. ""This is private property! We are on chartered territory!""
Pierce walked up the cabin steps, pausing at the threshold. The jet’s pilots stepped out of the cockpit with their hands raised, immediately surrendering to the federal officers flanking Pierce.
""You left my daughter on the sidewalk with fifty cents,"" Pierce said softly, stepping inside.
Evelyn threw her hands up, sobbing hysterically. ""It was Derek's idea! He forced me to sign! He said we would be ruined if we didn't get her trust fund!""
""Shut up, you idiot!"" Derek snarled at his mother, his face twisting with vile desperation. He reached into his coat, but Pierce’s head of security tackled him instantly, slamming him face-first onto the plush carpet.
The briefcase popped open. Stacks of bundled hundred-euro notes and forged citizenship documents spilled across the floor.
Claire walked slowly down the aisle, stopping right in front of Derek's pinned head.

""You told me I would die on the street, Derek,"" Claire said with chilling composure.
Derek spat blood from his split lip, glaring up at her. ""You think your rich daddy saved you? Check the ledger in that briefcase, Claire. The money didn't go to crypto. It went to paying off your late mother’s secret debts. You were bankrupt before I even met you.""
