Chapter 14 - The Iron Foundry

The industrial harbor smelled of oxidized iron, stagnant brine, and heavy diesel fuel. The abandoned foundry stood like a decaying leviathan among rows of rusted shipping containers, its shattered skylights dark against the rain-swept horizon.

Julian beached the launch along the muddy shoreline beneath the dry docks, letting the hull grind silently into the gravel. He moved with cold, mechanical efficiency, binding his bleeding side with heavy duct tape to staunch the flow of blood. His Kimber had three magazines left; he scavenged a discarded MPX carbine from the tactical bag on the boat, checking the chamber in the dark.

He slipped through the rusted chain-link fence, avoiding the sweeping beams of two vehicle-mounted spotlights mounted on high-chassis pickup trucks. Four mercenaries in gray tactical gear guarded the primary entrance of the blast furnace building.

Julian didn't take the door. He ascended the external iron catwalk that wound around the slag silos, climbing sixty feet into the rafters of the facility. Through the cracked glass of the industrial cupola, he peered down into the cavernous assembly hall below.

In the center of the concrete floor sat Maya. She was tied to an iron chair beneath the glare of a single overhead halogen work lamp. Her yellow jacket was torn, her small face streaked with tears and soot, but her tiny jaw was set in fierce, defiant silence. Resting on the floor beside her was her ruined plush rabbit, its stitching pulled apart.

Standing five paces away was a man in an impeccably tailored charcoal overcoat, surrounded by six heavily armed private contractors. The man had cold, aristocratic features and spoke into an encrypted satellite communicator with a crisp Swiss accent.

It was Director Richter, the head of the Zurich banking consortium that managed the Laurent family's international holdings.

""The girl's biometric signature is the secondary fail-safe for the trust accounts,"" Richter said calmly into the phone. ""Once we force her hand onto the sensor pad, the transfer to our shell entity in Panama is irreversible. We leave no witnesses. Execute the child the moment the green light flashes on the console.""

A mercenary stepped forward, pulling a heavy-caliber pistol from his holster and racking the slide with a loud, metallic clatter. Maya looked up at the weapon, her eyes wide with terror, a single tear cutting through the dust on her cheek.

Julian took a deep, silent breath from his perch sixty feet above. He didn't calculate odds; he didn't care about his survival.

He aimed the carbine straight through the skylight, aligning his sights with the mercenary standing over Maya.

""Not her,"" Julian whispered.

He squeezed the trigger.
