Chapter 2 - The Smiling Snake

The door mechanism hissed as Julian pressed the biometric release. Dominic stepped across the threshold, shaking water from an umbrella with crisp, military precision. He was tall, impeccably groomed in an Italian trench coat, his eyes bright with synthetic warmth.

""Julian,"" Dominic said, stepping into the foyer. ""You're up. I thought the migraine would have knocked you out until midnight.""

Julian leaned casually against the bar counter, deliberately letting his posture appear sluggish, slurring his voice just enough to sell the illusion. ""It's fading. But my vision is still blurring. Must be the weather.""

Dominic’s gaze flicked instinctively toward the lacquer coffee table. The empty porcelain cup sat beside the untouched coaster. A faint, almost imperceptible twitch of satisfaction passed over Dominic’s mouth before his brow furrowed in faux sympathy. ""You’re working yourself to an early grave, cousin. The board meeting in Zurich is seventy-two hours away. If you collapse on the floor of the boardroom, the voting bloc goes straight to the conservative faction.""

""And who would lead that faction in my absence, Dom?"" Julian asked, his voice low, deceptively idle.

Dominic chuckled, walking toward the grand piano where Maya sat silently on the bench, pretending to arrange her doll’s limbs. Dominic stopped beside the girl, resting his large palm on her tiny shoulder. Julian felt every sinew in his neck tighten; his finger brushed the pistol grip beneath his coat.

""You know me,"" Dominic replied smoothly. ""I just manage the perimeter. I don't care about the board seats. Speaking of perimeters, your personal driver, Vance, said you wanted the convoy rerouted through the lower harbor bypass tomorrow."" Dominic paused, his fingers tightening slightly on Maya’s shoulder. ""Did you clear that with me?""

""A precautionary detour,"" Julian said evenly. ""Routine protocol.""

Dominic looked down at Maya. The child kept her eyes glued to the keys, trembling ever so faintly beneath the man's grip. ""Maya,"" Dominic said softly, his tone dripping with cold familiarity. ""Did you show your uncle the drawing you made for him? The one with the black clouds?""

""She was sleeping,"" Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone that cut through the room’s humidity. ""Take your hand off the girl, Dominic.""

Dominic froze. The silence grew heavy, charged with violent potential. Slowly, Dominic lifted his hand from the child’s shoulder, a knowing grin spreading across his thin lips. ""You seem jumpy today, Julian. Paranoid, even. That’s usually the first sign of a nervous breakdown."" Dominic stepped back toward the door, tapping the leather folder against his hip. ""The night shift is posted. Sleep well, cousin. Let’s hope you make it to Zurich.""

The door closed with a metallic thud. Julian didn't exhale. He immediately sprinted to his private desk, keyed open the surveillance interface, and checked the hidden feed facing the corridor outside his suite.

On the screen, Dominic had stopped by the elevator bank. He took out his burner phone, brought it to his ear, and spoke with hurried intensity. Julian activated the audio intercept module tied to the corridor's fire sensor. Through the static, Dominic’s voice came through crystal clear: ""The child broke protocol. Send the clean-up team to the sub-level garage now. We take them tonight.""
