Chapter 3 - The Ghost Protocol

The digital clock on the mantle clicked to 5:42 PM. Julian had less than fifteen minutes before the clean-up team breached the penthouse perimeter. In high-rise warfare, staying trapped on the eightieth floor was suicide; every elevator, fire escape, and maintenance shaft was a choke point controlled by the security console in the basement—Dominic’s kingdom.

""Maya,"" Julian said, his voice stripped of hesitation. ""Put your coat on. We're leaving.""

The child didn't ask questions; fear had sharpened her instincts. She slipped her arms into her yellow wool jacket, clutching the plush rabbit with fierce determination. Julian moved to the floor-mounted safe behind the mahogany bookshelf. He bypassed the biometric sensor—which Dominic might have overridden—and entered the mechanical eight-digit emergency combination.

Inside rested an unmarked aluminum briefcase containing three sets of clean identities, three hundred thousand dollars in bearer bonds, a localized signal jammer, and two customized suppressed handguns with high-capacity magazines. Julian racked a round into each weapon, holstered one in his waistband, and handed Maya a small, waterproof emergency beacon disguised as a rabbit pendant.

""Keep this around your neck,"" he instructed, tying the cord securely beneath her collar. ""If we get separated, press the button on the back once. Only once.""

""Is Uncle Dominic a monster?"" she asked, her voice cracking slightly.

""He's worse,"" Julian said coldly. ""He's a traitor.""

Julian grabbed the signal jammer and flipped the toggle. Immediately, the smart lights in the living room flickered and died, plunging the penthouse into deep slate twilight. The central ventilation hissed shut as the penthouse entered an isolated fail-safe lockdown. Julian didn't head for the front door or the service elevator. Instead, he pried open the service maintenance duct concealed behind the kitchen pantry.

Years ago, during the penthouse’s reconstruction, Julian had secretly engineered an unmapped pneumatic freight shaft designed to bypass the primary elevator banks entirely, descending directly into an abandoned drainage conduit below the subterranean garage.

He lifted Maya into the narrow metal opening. ""Hold onto my shoulders. Do not look down.""

Julian slid into the harness attached to the manual descent cable. Just as he hooked the friction brake onto the guide rail, the heavy mahogany front doors of the penthouse exploded inward with a deafening percussion blast. Flash-bangs blinded the living room in rapid bursts of white light, followed by the heavy, disciplined clatter of combat boots and suppressed automatic fire shredding the furniture.

Through the narrow ventilation grate, Julian saw the silhouette of three tactical operatives sweeping the perimeter, their weapon-mounted lasers cutting through the smoke.

""Clear! He’s not in the master suite!"" a voice barked over a tactical radio.

""Check the sub-vents,"" came Dominic's cold order over the comms channel. ""He has the girl. Do not let either of them reach street level alive.""

Julian squeezed the friction brake, and they plummeted into the darkness of the shaft.
