Chapter 4 - The Lower Deck

The manual descent brake screeched softly against the cable, spraying faint metallic sparks into the pitch-black void before Julian caught the bumper stop at the sub-basement level. His boots hit the damp concrete floor with a muted splash. Maya was shivering against his chest, her face buried in his neck, but she didn't utter a sound.

Julian set her down, flicking on a low-intensity infrared penlight. They were in the utility labyrinth underneath the skyscraper's primary foundations, forty feet below the lowest parking tier. The air smelled of sulfur, wet concrete, and diesel exhaust. Somewhere above, the heavy hum of the building's emergency generators kicked in; Dominic had triggered the high-rise lockdown, isolating the entire tower from the city grid under the pretense of a security breach.

Julian checked his watch: 6:01 PM. His tactical phone registered zero cellular bars, but the encrypted local mesh network he shared with Vance—his veteran wheelman—flickered with a faint amber ping.

Julian pulled a tactical earpiece from his pocket, tuned the frequency, and spoke in a harsh whisper. ""Vance. Status.""

Static crackled, followed by the gritty, strained voice of an older man. ""Julian! Dominic’s strike unit took the primary motor pool ten minutes ago. They executed my relief driver. I’m pinned in the south drainage bypass with the armored Suburban. The exits are barricaded.""

""How many on the perimeter?"" Julian asked, guiding Maya along the rusted catwalk of the sewer line.

""At least eight shooters at the ramp gates. Heavy gear, thermal scopes,"" Vance replied, breathing heavily. ""They know you have an extraction route down here. They brought a heavy breaching truck.""

""Hold your position,"" Julian said, his eyes scanning the pipe intersections ahead. ""I’m bringing the package. We hit the south bypass gate together.""

Julian unclipped the suppressed Kimber. He knew the building's blueprints better than Dominic did; Dominic was a strategist who delegated, whereas Julian had overseen every subterranean pour of concrete when he inherited his father’s syndicate empire.

Twenty yards ahead, the catwalk opened into a concrete junction room housing the high-voltage electrical transformers. The yellow glow of an auxiliary emergency lamp cast long shadows against the walls. Julian paused, holding up a clenched fist to halt Maya.

Footsteps echoed from the concrete stairs directly above the junction. Two tactical mercenaries descended, their assault rifles raised at low-ready, their movements methodical, sweeping the floor with weapon-mounted lights.

""Point team, basement sector three clear,"" one mercenary spoke into his throat mic. ""Moving toward the auxiliary pump—""

Julian didn't wait. He leaned around the concrete pillar, aligning his sights with lethal economy. Two soft thwips hissed through the suppressor. The first mercenary collapsed instantly, his helmet clattering against the deck. The second man swung his muzzle upward, but Julian’s third round caught him beneath the chin before he could squeeze the trigger. Both bodies dropped into the shallow water with a dull splash.

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the fallen operative's radio, shoved a fresh magazine into his sidearm, and grabbed Maya’s hand. But as he stepped over the dead mercenaries, the radio on the chest rig squawked:

""Bravo team, report. We have an anomaly on the south pump sensor. Bravo team, respond.""

Dominic’s voice followed immediately, cold and devoid of doubt: ""They’re in the water conduit. Flood the intake gates. Drown the shaft.""
