REBUILDING BROKEN BRIDGES / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - Brothers First

The metal cabinet rattled violently under the impact, scattering dust and old papers across the floor like autumn leaves. Arthur didn't fight back; instead, a sickening, arrogant smile crept across his weathered face as he looked up into Julian’s blazing, fury-filled eyes.

""Go ahead,"" Arthur wheezed, his voice smooth and unapologetic. ""Break my jaw. Throw me out into the rain. It won't change the fact that your brother spent ten years bleeding himself dry to pay off debts I framed him for, while you rode motorcycles across the country playing the victim.""

Julian’s fist trembled inches from Arthur’s nose, his knuckles white with suppressed rage. Every drop of anger, every lost year, every sleepless night of regret compressed into that single, trembling fist.

""You burned the shop,"" Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with lethal intensity. ""You blamed Marcus, and you let me walk away so we'd tear each other apart.""

""Smart boy,"" Arthur chuckled darkly, coughing slightly against the collar still clenched in Julian’s grip. ""Your father left the business to Marcus, not me. I needed capital to clear my own debts. A little fire insurance payout solved all my problems—and destroying your family in the process was just a delightful bonus. But Marcus... stubborn idiot that he is... refused to declare bankruptcy. He kept working seventy-hour weeks, paying off every single fraudulent claim, just to keep the family name clean. And it finally broke his heart.""

Hearing those words was like taking a physical blow to the stomach. The image of Marcus lying in that hospital bed, pale, exhausted, and wired to machines, flashed violently through Julian’s mind. All those years of cold silence, of bitter pride, of distance—built entirely on a lie fabricated by the man hanging from his fist.

""You ruined his life,"" Julian growled, his arm pulling back to deliver a devastating blow.

""If you hit me, you'll never hear the rest,"" Arthur interrupted smoothly, his eyes flashing with cunning. ""Like where the digital backups of the confession and the financial records are stored. Destroy me, and Marcus spends the rest of his life legally owing millions to people who don't negotiate.""

Julian froze. His breathing came in ragged, heavy gasps as he stared down at the man who had stolen their lives. For a long, silent moment, the wind howled through the charred rafters above them, carrying the smell of rain and ancient ash.

Slowly, deliberately, Julian opened his fist and released Arthur’s collar, stepping back and wiping his hands on his jeans as if cleaning off filth.

""You're not worth going to prison for,"" Julian said coldly, his voice flat and controlled. ""Because unlike you, I have a family waiting for me.""

Before Arthur could react, Julian reached out with blinding speed, snatching the open briefcase filled with the original deeds and financial files off the crate. With his other hand, he pulled his phone out, having recorded every single word of Arthur’s confession loud and clear on the voice recorder app running in his pocket since he stepped through the door.

""What... what are you doing?"" Arthur stammered, suddenly losing his arrogant composure as he realized he had been played.

""Just collecting what's ours,"" Julian replied, stepping backward toward the shattered doorway. He tapped the screen, stopping the recording and sending an encrypted copy directly to Clara’s legal firm with a single press. ""The police are already listening to a live stream of this conversation, Arthur. And unlike ten years ago, we have the paper trail.""

Arthur lunged forward desperately, but Julian sidestepped smoothly, kicking a heavy metal filing cabinet across the doorway to block his path.

Julian turned and sprinted out into the pouring rain, vaulting over the chain-link fence and climbing back onto his Harley-Davidson. He kicked the starter, and the engine roared to life with a defiant, thunderous scream that cut through the stormy night.

As he sped away from the ruins of the past, racing back toward the hospital where Marcus and little Leo were waiting, Julian felt the heavy weight finally lift from his shoulders. The road ahead was long, and the healing would take time, but for the first time in ten years, the road was clear.

Brothers first. Always."
