Chapter 7 - The Operating Room Doors

""Surgery? What do you mean surgery? You said he was stabilizing!"" Clara demanded, stepping forward and using her best courtroom tone, as if authority could bend medical reality.
""His cardiac enzymes are spiking again, and the scan shows an acute arterial blockage that we cannot manage medically,"" the doctor explained quickly, not breaking his stride as he checked the IV lines. ""If we don't operate within the next twenty minutes, we might lose him permanently. Now please, I need you all to clear the room so my team can work.""
The blood drained from Julian’s face. He looked down at Marcus, whose eyes were wide with a terrifying awareness. Marcus was trying to pull the oxygen mask away, trying to speak, trying to reach for Leo.
""No, no, Dad, listen to the doctor!"" Leo cried out, misinterpreting the struggle as anger directed at him, his little lip starting to quiver uncontrollably.
Julian immediately scooped Leo up into his arms, pressing the boy’s face tightly against his leather vest so he couldn't see the frantic chaos beginning to unfold around the bed. ""Hey, look at me, Leo. Look right here at me, buddy,"" Julian commanded gently, his voice steady despite the raw terror gripping his own heart. ""Your dad is a fighter. He fought through worse than this when we were kids. He's going to be fine. But we need to let the doctors do their job.""
""Are you sure?"" Leo sobbed into Julian's jacket.
""I've never been more sure of anything in my life,"" Julian lied smoothly, a heavy knot twisting violently in his stomach.
Clara stood frozen by the corner of the room, her briefcase clutched in her hands like a shield against a world she couldn't control with contracts or arguments. For all her posturing, she looked small, utterly helpless against the cold machinery of mortality.
""Sir, I need you out in the waiting room now,"" the nurse insisted, pushing the heavy rolling equipment toward the bed.
Julian turned, carrying Leo tightly against his chest, and began walking toward the door. Clara followed closely behind in absolute, stunned silence. As they crossed the threshold, Julian threw one last look over his shoulder.

Marcus was being wheeled toward the internal corridor doors, the bright overhead lights reflecting off the metal frame of the bed. Just before the heavy double doors swung shut, Marcus managed to raise his hand—the one with the small, faded tattoo of an old motorcycle engine—and gave his brother a weak, familiar thumbs-up.
The heavy doors slammed shut with a definitive, chilling thud, leaving Julian, Clara, and little Leo stranded in the cold fluorescent glow of the hospital hallway.
