Chapter 9 - The Surgeon’s Verdict

The silence that fell over the waiting room was absolute. Even the flickering television in the corner seemed to quiet down. Julian gently shifted Leo, making sure the boy remained asleep, and stood up slowly, his stiff joints popping in the quiet room. Clara stopped her pacing entirely, her hands gripping the back of a plastic chair as if bracing for a physical blow.
The surgeon walked over slowly, wiping his hands with a small paper towel before tossing it into a nearby bin. He looked tired—the kind of bone-deep fatigue that only came from hours of fighting death across a stainless-steel table.
""Are you the family of Marcus Vance?"" the surgeon asked, his voice steady and neutral.
""I'm his brother,"" Julian stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. ""And this is his sister. How is he? Did it work?""
The surgeon let out a long, measured sigh, rubbing the bridge of his nose where his safety glasses had left a deep red indentation. ""The procedure was successful. We managed to repair the primary arterial blockage, and the tissue damage was less extensive than our initial scans suggested. His heart is beating on its own again.""
A collective wave of pure, unfiltered relief crashed over the room. Clara let out a sharp gasp, collapsing slightly into the chair behind her and pressing trembling fingers against her mouth. Julian closed his eyes tightly, leaning his forehead briefly against the cool wall behind him as a massive, crushing weight lifted from his chest.
""Thank God,"" Julian whispered, his voice thick with unhedged emotion. ""Can we see him?""
""Not just yet,"" the surgeon cautioned, holding up a hand. ""He's still deeply sedated in the recovery ICU. His body has been through an incredible amount of trauma, and the next twenty-four hours are critical. He's on a ventilator, and he won't be waking up fully until tomorrow morning. But... given the circumstances, I am cautiously optimistic.""
""Optimistic is a medical term for 'he's going to make it,' right?"" Clara asked, her voice uncharacteristically fragile.
A faint, tired smile touched the corners of the surgeon's mouth. ""It means he has a fighting chance. And right now, that's all we could ask for. Let the nurses settle him in, and one of you can visit in short shifts starting around midnight.""
The surgeon gave a polite nod and walked back down the hallway toward the surgical wing.
Julian looked down at Leo, who was beginning to stir, letting out a soft yawn and rubbing his big hazel eyes against Julian's leather vest.
""Did... did the doctors fix Daddy?"" Leo asked sleepily, his little voice barely above a whisper.
Julian smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached his eyes for the first time in three years. He knelt down so Leo could see his face clearly.

""Yeah, buddy,"" Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. ""Your dad is the toughest guy on the planet. He won the fight.""
Just as Leo let out a happy sigh of relief, Julian's phone buzzed sharply in his pocket, displaying an unknown number with a local area code—a call that would change everything.
