Chapter 6 - A Faint Awakening

The entire room held its collective breath. The rhythmic hum of the medical equipment seemed to fade into the background as Marcus’s hand twitched against the crisp white sheet. His fingers grazed the edge of the black-rimmed glasses resting on the bedside table.
""Marcus?"" Clara stepped forward hesitantly, her usual sharp composure faltering for a split second as she approached the bed. ""Marcus, can you hear me?""
Marcus’s eyes slowly fluttered open, blinking against the harsh glare of the hospital lights. His gaze was hazy, unfocused at first, staring blankly at the acoustic tiles of the ceiling. Then, his brow furrowed in a deep, painful line as reality slowly bled back into his consciousness.
Leo broke away from Julian instantly, scrambling onto the edge of the mattress with infinite care. ""Daddy?"" he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of hope and fear. ""Daddy, you're awake.""
Marcus’s head rolled slowly to the side. When his blurred vision finally locked onto the small, tear-streaked face of his son, a profound, transformative softness washed over his pale features. He tried to speak, but the ventilator tube taped securely in his mouth blocked any words, producing only a muffled, frustrated groan.
""Don't try to talk, bro,"" Julian said, stepping up beside the bed and placing a heavy, reassuring hand on Marcus’s shoulder. ""You've been through the wringer. Just breathe.""
Marcus’s eyes darted toward Julian, widening in sheer disbelief. For a long, suspended heartbeat, the brothers stared at each other across the chasm of three silent years. There was no anger in Marcus’s eyes—only a weary, overwhelming flood of emotion that threatened to spill over.
Clara frowned, clearly uncomfortable with the emotional reunion unfolding before her. ""The doctor said he shouldn't be subjected to this kind of stress. Julian, you're only making his heart rate spike—look at the monitor!""
Julian glanced up. The green line was indeed climbing faster, the beats ticking upward. Panic flickered in Julian’s chest, making him pull his hand back as if he had been burned. ""Maybe... maybe I should wait outside.""
Marcus’s hand suddenly shot out with surprising, desperate strength. His fingers gripped Julian’s leather sleeve, anchoring him firmly to the bedside. Marcus shook his head fiercely, his eyes pleading, locking Julian in place. Don't leave me again.
Julian swallowed hard, the old resentment melting away in the face of his brother's vulnerability. He nodded slowly, squeezing Marcus’s hand back. ""I'm not going anywhere, man. I'm right here.""
Marcus exhaled a shaky breath through his nose, his eyes closing for a brief moment to regain his strength. Then, he looked down at Leo, using his free hand to weakly stroke his son's messy light brown hair.

Suddenly, the door flew open again, and the lead doctor rushed in, holding a clipboard with a stern expression.
""We need everyone out of the room immediately,"" the doctor announced. ""His vitals are unstable again, and we need to prep him for emergency surgery.""
