Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Down in the subterranean garage of the Vance estate, three black armored SUVs stood idling, their exhaust pipes sending faint grey plumes into the cool night air. Ten men, dressed in nondescript dark suits and carrying concealed tactical gear, took their positions with military discipline. Marcus opened the heavy rear passenger door of the center vehicle for Arthur, who slid into the leather seat without hesitation.

""Route 4 will take us through downtown in twelve minutes,"" Marcus said from the front passenger seat, glancing back at his boss via the rearview mirror. ""Sterling Tower has private lobby security and biometric elevator access. Julian’s private security detail controls the penthouse floor.""

""Julian’s security detail consists of hired men on a corporate payroll,"" Arthur said, resting his cane between his knees. ""Tell them who is entering the building. Give them one chance to step aside. If they draw a weapon, put them down.""

Outside, rain began to lash against the reinforced windows of the SUV as the convoy surged through the wrought-iron gates of the estate, entering the city's dark veins. Arthur opened a leather-bound folder resting on the console. Inside were dossiers on Julian Sterling and his father, Raymond Sterling—financial records, off-shore shell companies, hidden accounts, and personal leverage points Arthur had quietly compiled over the three years of Claire’s marriage.

Arthur had permitted the marriage because Claire had believed she loved Julian, and because Arthur had foolishly thought a civilized world protected young women of prominent names. He had ignored the subtle signs: Claire's fading smiles, her rare visits, the guarded phone calls, the sudden preference for long-sleeved silk blouses even in high summer.

A wave of bitter self-reproach washed over the elder Vance, immediately hardening into pure vengeance.

""Step on the gas,"" Arthur ordered softly. ""Every second she spends in that room is a debt I will collect in blood.""

Up ahead, through the sheet of falling rain, the high-rise silhouette of Sterling Tower pierced the stormy sky, its penthouse glowing like an arrogant beacon.
