Chapter 14 - The Final Intrusion

Heavy grey clouds rolled in from the mountains, darkening the sky over the Vance estate as noon approached. In the expansive stone courtyard, rain began to patter against the slate tiles. Arthur stood under the shelter of the grand portico, wearing a dark trench coat, his polished cane planted firmly on the ground. Beside him, hidden behind the stone columns, Marcus and two tactical operators stood motionless, their weapons holstered but ready.
Suddenly, the wrought-iron side gate—deliberately left unlatched by Marcus's men—creaked open.
A battered black sedan careened into the driveway, its tires screeching against the wet gravel before slamming to a halt near the central fountain. The driver's door was kicked open, and Julian Sterling stumbled out.
He was unrecognizable from the polished socialite of twenty-four hours ago. His clothes were rumpled and soaked with rain, his hair wild, his eyes bloodshot with manic rage. In his right hand, gripped tightly with his bandaged fingers, was a black semi-automatic pistol.
""Vance!"" Julian screamed, his voice echoing across the empty courtyard. ""Bring her out! Bring Claire out here!""
Arthur did not move an inch. He stood tall, looking down from the steps of the portico with cold disdain. ""Drop the weapon, Julian. You are trespassing on land that will soon become your tomb.""
""You ruined my family!"" Julian shrieked, raising the gun and aiming it directly at Arthur's chest. ""You took my money! You turned my father against me! I was going to run this city, and you made me a fugitive in one night!""
""You ruined yourself the moment you laid hands on my blood,"" Arthur said, taking a slow step down the stone stairs, his cane tapping rhythmically. ""You thought power was measured in bank accounts and intimidation behind closed doors. You know nothing of true power, boy.""

""Shut up!"" Julian screamed, his hand shaking as he pulled the hammer back on the pistol. ""Call Claire out here right now, or I swear to God I will put a bullet through your heart!""
Arthur stopped five yards away from the barrel of the gun. He did not blink. ""Look behind you, Julian.""
