Chapter 10 - Secrets in the Manila Folder

The manila folder sat ominously on the kitchen counter, its surface worn and stained with grease and age, radiating an aura of immediate danger. Sarah stared at it as if it were a venomous snake coiled and ready to strike at anyone foolish enough to touch it. Mark took a slow, deliberate step forward, his eyes locked onto the folder while his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. ""What is this?"" Mark demanded, his voice dangerously low as he glared at the grinning biker who leaned casually against the refrigerator. ""Insurance,"" the biker replied smoothly, spitting out the word like a bad taste. ""You think guys like us just wander across state lines for a family reunion? Open it up, soldier. Your past just caught up to you, and it brought a whole lot of company.""

With trembling fingers, Sarah reached out and flipped open the heavy cardboard cover, revealing a thick stack of legal documents, birth certificates, and polaroid photographs. On top was a faded snapshot of a younger version of the biker standing outside a dusty roadside diner, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a coarse blue blanket. Mark leaned over the counter, his eyes scanning the documents frantically until they landed on a sworn affidavit bearing a signature he hadn't seen in nearly a decade—his own. ""This... this was signed under duress,"" Mark muttered, shaking his head in absolute denial as cold sweat broke out across his forehead. ""I was young, I was shipping out to basic training, and they told me...""

""They told you that signing away your rights was the only way the kid and his mother would ever be safe from the mess you left behind,"" the biker finished for him, his sarcastic facade finally cracking to reveal a flash of genuine anger. ""Well, she's gone now, and the people she was hiding from found the boy last month. I brought him here because you're the only shield he's got left in this godforsaken world."" Sarah dropped the papers, her face turning completely pale as she looked from the incriminating documents to her husband in sheer horror. The front door creaked open slowly on its hinges, letting in a cool draft of morning air as small, hesitant footsteps echoed softly into the quiet hallway.
