Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

Mark slowly stood back up from the kitchen floor, his movements mechanical and stiff as the sudden shift in his mood cast a dark shadow over the room. Sarah noticed the immediate change in his posture, the way his jaw tightened and his eyes grew distant, searching the empty corners of the kitchen instead of meeting her gaze. The radiant joy that had filled his face moments ago vanished, replaced by a guarded, haunted expression she hadn't seen since the early days of their marriage. ""Mark?"" she asked softly, her voice laced with sudden concern as she dropped her arms to her sides, the ultrasound photo still clutched tightly in her hand.
The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating, entirely different from the peaceful quiet that had greeted him when he first walked through the door. Mark turned his head toward the window, watching a stray car drive slowly down their quiet suburban street under the bright midday sun. He swallowed hard, his throat feeling as dry as sandpaper as he tried to find the words to bridge the sudden chasm opening between them. ""Did you... did you tell anyone else about this yet?"" he finally managed to ask, his voice sounding raspy, strained, and entirely devoid of its previous warmth. Sarah shook her head slowly, stepping back a half-step, her brow furrowed in confusion and growing unease at his bizarre reaction.
""No, you're the very first person, Mark. I waited until you came home because I wanted us to share this moment together,"" she replied, her tone defensive now as the sting of his coldness began to set in. Mark didn't answer right away; instead, his hand drifted unconsciously to his pocket, gripping a small, hidden item he had kept tucked away during his entire deployment. It was an old, folded letter bearing a postmark from a city three thousand miles away, a letter he had received just forty-eight hours before his battalion boarded the transport home. The words written inside that envelope had warned him about a secret from his past that was supposedly buried forever, a secret that now threatened to tear their bright future apart before it had even truly begun.
