Chapter 13 - The Closing Trap

""Get away from the windows, both of you—now!"" Mark commanded in a sharp, authoritative tone that brooked no argument, instantly taking command of the chaotic situation. Sarah grabbed Leo by the shoulders, pulling the bewildered boy down behind the sturdy wooden structure of the kitchen island while her mind raced in sheer panic. The biker pulled a heavy hunting knife from his belt with a practiced flick of his wrist, checking the edge with a cold, experienced eye. ""Looks like they tracked us across the state line faster than I calculated,"" the biker muttered under his breath, stepping toward the front hallway with quiet, measured strides. ""You've got about sixty seconds before they reach the front porch, Mark. What's the play?""
Mark scanned the kitchen frantically, his military training mapping out every exit, blind spot, and tactical advantage in the suburban home. His eyes landed on the back door leading out to the fenced-in backyard, offering a clear escape route toward the dense woods bordering the neighborhood. ""We take the back exit through the laundry room, head for the tree line, and get into my truck,"" Mark instructed swiftly, extending a hand to help Sarah up from the floor. Sarah clutched her stomach instinctively, fear for her unborn child warring fiercely with the desperate need to protect the young boy now standing right beside her. ""My car keys are on the hook by the garage door,"" Sarah said, her voice shaking violently as she pointed toward the hallway.
Before anyone could make a move toward the back exit, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the front of the house as the wooden front door was violently kicked off its hinges. Shards of splintered wood flew across the entryway as two heavily built men in dark tactical gear stepped quickly over the threshold, their weapons raised and scanning the living room. Mark shoved Sarah and Leo deeper behind the kitchen counter, his heart hammering violently against his ribs as he prepared to face the ultimate test of his life. The biker cursed loudly, stepping into the hallway with his knife ready, ready to buy them the precious seconds they needed to escape through the back.
