Chapter 12 - A Father's Reckoning

The boy swallowed hard, his big hazel eyes fixed on Sarah before shifting back to the tall, uniformed man standing frozen beside her. ""My name is Leo,"" the boy whispered, the words sounding small and fragile in the large, sunlit kitchen. Mark finally found his voice, a rough, choked sound escaping his lips as he dropped heavily to his knees right in front of the child. He reached out with trembling hands, his fingers hovering just inches away as if he were afraid the boy might vanish like smoke if he dared to touch him. ""Leo..."" Mark repeated the name like a foreign prayer, the syllables tasting bitter and sweet all at the same time on his tongue.

Sarah watched them, her heart aching with a complex storm of emotions as she realized her quiet, perfect homecoming fantasy had been completely upended by reality. Yet, looking at the way Leo stared at Mark with absolute, unyielding hope, she knew there was no turning back from this moment. ""Your mom... she told me about you before she got too sick,"" Leo said softly, his lower lip quivering slightly as he fought bravely against his own tears. ""She said you were a brave soldier who had to leave, but she always promised you'd remember me if I ever found you."" Mark pulled the boy into a fierce, suffocating embrace, burying his face in the child's messy light brown hair while his shoulders shook with uncontainable grief and relief.

The biker cleared his throat loudly behind them, breaking the emotional spell with a sharp reminder of the danger lurking just outside their front door. ""Touch touching and all that, but you two might want to check the street,"" the biker warned, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper as he peered cautiously through the living room window blinds. ""I spotted a charcoal sedan turning onto this block about two minutes ago. They aren't here to drop off mail, Sergeant."" Mark pulled back from the embrace, his hazel eyes flashing with sudden, cold tactical brilliance as the soldier inside him woke up fully to the immediate threat. He stood up swiftly, pulling Leo behind his protective frame and turning his sharp gaze toward Sarah, whose face had gone completely white with terror.
