Chapter 1 - The Shattered Altar

The heavy oak doors of St. Jude’s Cathedral slammed shut behind Ethan, cutting off the gasps of two hundred distinguished guests and the shrill cry of his mother. He did not look back. He tore off his bow tie, ripping the top button of his tailored tuxedo shirt as cold midday rain struck his face.

Behind him lay a life engineered to perfection: Vanessa Sterling, heiress to an empire, standing frozen at the altar in chantilly lace; his father’s impending merger secured by holy matrimony; the blinding flashbulbs of society photographers. None of it existed anymore. The only sound roaring in his ears was Claire’s fragile, broken whisper through the receiver: In the maternity ward.

He abandoned his car in the gridlocked traffic three blocks away. He sprinted through the pouring rain, his polished dress shoes skidding violently across wet asphalt. Pedestrians parted in shock at the sight of a drenched groom tearing through downtown traffic like a hunted man. Every breath tore into his lungs like swallowed glass.

Nine months ago, Claire had walked away without an explanation, leaving behind an empty apartment and a single note begging him never to search for her. He had buried his grief inside Vanessa’s immaculate, hollow world. He had convinced himself that Claire had stopped loving him.

When Ethan crashed through the sliding glass doors of St. Anthony’s Presbyterian Hospital, the sterile scent of bleach and rubbing alcohol hit him like a physical blow. The receptionist gasped as Ethan slammed both palms onto the front desk, water dripping from his soaked lapels onto the immaculate counter.

""Claire Henderson,"" Ethan gasped, his chest heaving, veins bulging along his neck. ""Where is Claire Henderson?""

The nurse stared at his ruined tuxedo, eyes wide with alarm. ""Sir, you can't just burst in here—""

""Where is she?"" he roared, his voice cracking with pure terror. ""She called me from maternity! Please!""

The nurse typed rapidly, her eyes darting between the monitor and the wild desperation in Ethan’s eyes. ""Fourth floor. Room 418. But visiting hours are—""

Ethan was already gone, shoving past orderly carts and lunging toward the stairwell. He took the steps three at a time, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

When he reached Room 418, the hallway was deathly quiet, illuminated by flickering fluorescent lights. The door stood slightly ajar.

Ethan swallowed hard, his trembling fingers pressing against the painted wood. He pushed it open.

Claire lay against the propped-up pillows, pale and exhausted, dark rings bruising her delicate eyes. In her arms was a tiny bundle wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

Claire looked up, her gaze locking onto him. She didn't speak. But as Ethan took a hesitant step forward, the tiny infant in her arms began to whimper, and on the bedside table beside her rested an open legal envelope bearing the Sterling family crest.
