Chapter 4 - The Blackmail

The sterile hospital room fell into a suffocating silence, broken only by the monitor’s frantic beeping and Noah’s muffled whimpers.
Ethan’s heart seized. ""Prison? What are you talking about?""
Richard Sterling stepped forward, leaning heavily on his silver-tipped cane, his gaze fixing Ethan with predatory amusement. ""Your father’s firm was bankrupt eighteen months ago, Ethan. The financial fraud he committed to stay afloat would have earned him twenty years in federal custody. I bought the debt. I bought the evidence. The only condition for burying it was your marriage to Vanessa.""
Ethan felt a crushing pressure in his chest. His father’s desperate pleas, his mother’s insistence on the wedding—it had never been about social ambition. It was about survival.
""When Miss Henderson became pregnant,"" Richard continued smoothly, ""she threatened to shatter that delicate balance. I gave her an ultimatum: accept the money, sign the child over to you and Vanessa to be raised legitimately within our estate, or watch your father’s fraud become front-page news. Your entire family would be destroyed before noon.""
""I signed the initial intent because I was terrified,"" Claire sobbed, rocking the crying baby frantically. ""They cornered me in my apartment, Ethan. They showed me the legal files. They said they would take the baby by force through child welfare anyway because I had no money to fight them.""
""And she kept her promise until this morning,"" Vanessa interjected, her voice dripping with spite. ""Until she called you at the altar like a cheap melodramatic coward. She wants more money, Ethan. Can't you see that?""
""Shut up!"" Ethan shouted, stepping directly into Vanessa’s space. The two bodyguards tensed, their hands twitching beneath their jackets, but Richard signaled them to stand down.
""You knew about the baby all along,"" Ethan whispered, his eyes wide with disgust. ""You smiled at me every day for six months knowing she was carrying my child. You planned to take my son and pretend he was ours?""
""I planned to save you,"" Vanessa retorted coldly. ""I planned to give that bastard child a name and a future that this pathetic girl could never provide. And you threw it in my face in front of the entire city.""
""The deal is dead,"" Ethan said, pulling the documents from his pocket and ripping them into shreds. The paper fluttered to the floor like cheap confetti. ""Get out of here. Both of you.""
Richard Sterling smiled, a cold, humorless curling of his thin lips. ""Ripping paper doesn't dissolve the digital copies, boy. Nor does it erase your father's crimes. Security!""

Two armed security guards entered the room, flanking the hospital administrator who looked utterly terrified.
""I'm sorry, Mr. Sterling,"" the administrator stammered. ""Child Protective Services has just been contacted per your formal complaint. This infant's welfare is now officially under state review.""
