Chapter 14 - The Unraveling

Vanessa turned toward her father, her composed mask completely shattering. ""Dad? You said those recordings were stored on a private server! You said he didn't have access!""
""Quiet, Vanessa!"" Richard barked, but the damage was done.
Attorney General Hayes slowly lowered the warrant in his hand. He looked at Richard, then at his niece, his expression hardening into pure professional detachment. He had backed the Sterlings for political power, but he was not going to follow them into federal prison.
""Is this true, Richard?"" the Attorney General asked, his voice dead and dangerous.
""It's a setup,"" Richard stammered, backing toward the entrance. ""Robert, look at what they're doing! They're trying to steal the merger!""
""The merger is dead,"" Evelyn Vance declared, stepping between Richard and the door. ""Vance Energy has officially pulled its tender offer. Tomorrow morning, our legal department will release the full dossier on Sterling Global's foreign shell companies and the illegal market manipulation used to artificially depress my late husband's assets.""
Richard took a threatening step forward, his cane raised, but two armed Vance security guards stepped into his path, their weapons drawn and leveled at his chest.
""Get off my property,"" Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. ""Before I have my men shoot you for criminal trespassing.""
Vanessa looked across the room at Ethan. Her immaculate appearance was ruined, her hair disheveled from the storm, her eyes wild with humiliation and hatred.
""You chose her?"" Vanessa spat, her voice cracking with venomous disbelief. ""You threw away a fortune, a dynasty, and the most powerful family in the state for a broken girl and a mistake?""
Ethan walked over to the bassinet. He gently picked up Noah, holding his son securely against his chest, feeling the boy's soft, warm breath against his collarbone.
""Claire is everything you will never be,"" Ethan said, looking Vanessa dead in the eyes. ""She loved me when I had nothing. She protected our child with her own life while you were busy trying to buy him like a corporate asset. You didn't lose tonight because of Claire's inheritance, Vanessa. You lost because you don't even know what love is.""
Vanessa opened her mouth to speak, but two state troopers stepped beside her, their hands resting on their utility belts.
""Miss Sterling, Mr. Sterling,"" the senior trooper said firmly. ""You need to come with us to the state bureau for questioning regarding the incident at the harbor tunnel.""
Richard looked at his daughter, then at Ethan, his arrogant posture finally breaking into the slouched frame of a defeated old man. Without another word, he turned and shuffled out into the pouring rain, surrounded by police officers.
Vanessa followed, glaring back at Ethan one last time before the heavy mahogany doors closed, shutting out the storm forever.
Ethan turned around. The room was quiet now, the tension dissolving into the warm, golden light of the fireplace.
From the doorway of the parlor, Claire stood leaning against the frame, wrapped in a warm wool blanket. She looked fragile, but her eyes were shining with tears of relief.
Ethan walked over to her, carrying their son. He wrapped his free arm around her waist, supporting her weight as she rested her head against his shoulder.
""It's over,"" Ethan whispered, kissing the crown of her head. ""They can never touch us again.""

Claire smiled softly, her fingers gently stroking Noah’s cheek. But as Ethan looked down at her face, he noticed a shadow of hesitation lingering behind her tired eyes.
""Ethan,"" Claire whispered, her voice trembling slightly. ""There's one more thing you need to know.""
