Chapter 8 - The Bloodline

Ethan picked up the glowing tablet, his brow furrowing in confusion. ""Claire’s mother? What does Claire’s family have to do with this?""

Claire looked up, her face pale, her lips trembling as she held the sleeping baby. ""My mother died when I was six, Ethan. She was a housekeeper. What are you talking about?""

""She wasn't just a housekeeper,"" Liam said grimly, accelerating onto the expressway toward the city outskirts. ""Her name was Eleanor Vance. She was the younger sister of Arthur Vance—the founder of Vance Energy, the parent company that Sterling Global is trying to acquire in this week's merger.""

Ethan stared at the screen. Documents from thirty years ago flickered on the tablet display: birth certificates, corporate trust funds, and a sealed lineage registry.

""The entire merger,"" Ethan whispered, the horrifying puzzle pieces clicking together in his mind. ""Richard told everyone my father's firm was the key to the deal. But it wasn't my father. It was Claire.""

""Arthur Vance died three weeks ago without a known heir,"" Liam explained, glancing in the rearview mirror. ""His thirty-percent voting share was supposed to automatically default to the Sterling consortium unless a direct blood descendant claimed the inheritance within thirty days. Richard Sterling searched for Eleanor's child for months—and he found Claire.""

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. ""That's why... that's why Richard offered me that money months ago. It wasn't just about Ethan's father. He told me that if I disappeared, Ethan would be safe.""

""If Claire surrendered her parental rights to the child,"" Ethan realized, his voice trembling with sheer horror, ""and if Vanessa and I adopted Noah as our legal son... Vanessa would gain legal guardianship over Noah's voting shares in Vance Energy.""

""Bingo,"" Liam said. ""Noah isn't just Ethan’s child. He holds the controlling interest in a twelve-billion-dollar energy conglomerate. Vanessa and Richard didn't want a family, Ethan. They wanted a pawn with royal blood to sign away the corporation.""

The magnitude of the betrayal hit Ethan like a freight train. Every dinner, every smile, every soft touch from Vanessa had been part of a cold-blooded corporate takeover. She had used Ethan’s guilt about his father’s debts to force him to the altar, knowing that his child with Claire was the golden key to absolute wealth.

""They won't stop,"" Claire said, panic rising in her voice as she hugged Noah. ""If they can't get me to sign, and if they can't force Ethan to adopt him through Vanessa...""

""They will eliminate the heirs,"" Liam said quietly.

Before Ethan could respond, a heavy, blacked-out SUV barreled out of an intersection behind them, slamming into the rear quarter-panel of Liam’s sedan.

The car spun violently across the wet highway, tires screaming as the guardrail rushed toward them.
