Chapter 11 - The Serpent's Lair

The storm reached its crescendo as Elena, Gabriel, and Marcus re-entered the underbelly of the penthouse tower through the subterranean access tunnels. Thunder rattled the concrete foundation, masking the mechanical groans of the ancient freight lift as it hoisted them upward toward the penthouse level.
Marcus checked the magazine of his sidearm, his face pale but determined. ""Julian’s study connects to the primary vault room. Cole’s men will likely be staging the extraction from there. If we cut the main breaker to the penthouse, the emergency generator will take fifteen seconds to kick in. That is our only window to breach without setting off the automated silent alarms.""
""I'll handle the power grid in the basement substation,"" Clara’s voice crackled through their private earpieces. ""Stand by. Breaker cuts in three... two... one.""
Instantly, the faint lights inside the elevator shaft plunged into pitch darkness. The heavy lift shuddered to a halt right at the cellar level. Gabriel used a crowbar to pry open the wooden doors, slipping silently into the opulent, stone-lined wine cellar beneath Julian’s private study.
Above them, muffled shouts in Russian and English echoed through the floorboards. Flashlights swept across the ceiling gaps. Elena moved with silent agility, drawing her weapon as they navigated the spiral staircase leading into the study.
Pushing through the hidden bookshelf door, they entered the wreckage of the study. Papers were scattered across the floor, and the wall safe behind the oil painting stood wide open, its shelves stripped clean.
Elena crept toward the master suite. Through the partially opened double doors, she saw Julian standing over an open aluminum flight case, frantically shoving stacks of bearer bonds and encrypted hard drives inside. Across from him stood Viktor Cole—a short, stocky man with cold reptilian eyes, dressed in an immaculate gray cashmere overcoat, smoking an expensive cigarette without an ounce of haste.
""You're panicking, Julian,"" Cole said smoothly, his heavy accent thick with condescension. ""A man who panics makes fatal errors. Like letting your hysterical wife leave with a flash drive.""
""She knows about the shell accounts!"" Julian snarled, his hair disheveled, his expensive shirt drenched in cold sweat. ""And Gabriel Cross is out! If they reach the authorities—""

""The authorities work for the people who sign their checks,"" Cole interrupted coldly. ""Elena and the girl will be located and liquidated by morning. As for Gabriel Cross... he should have been buried six years ago. I will correct that oversight personally.""
""You won't get the chance, Cole,"" Elena’s voice rang out from the doorway like a thunderclap.
