Chapter 5 - The Safehouse on the Pier

The sedan navigated the gritty labyrinth of the industrial shipping docks, far away from the polished skyscrapers of Julian’s financial empire. The air smelled of salt spray, rusted iron, and rotting timber. Clara pulled the vehicle inside an abandoned warehouse marked with weathered maritime insignias. The heavy metal rolling door descended behind them with a deafening rattle.
Inside, the warehouse was sparsely lit by hanging work lamps. In the center of the vast concrete floor sat a battered wooden table flanked by several folding chairs. A portable medical station had already been set up in the corner, staffed by a middle-aged woman wearing scrubs.
""Let Sarah look at Maya,"" Clara said gently, placing a hand on Elena’s soaked shoulder. ""She is a retired trauma surgeon. She’s completely off the grid and untraceable.""
Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, her maternal protective instincts flaring, but Maya’s pale face and shallow breathing gave her no choice. She carried the child over to the examination table. Sarah worked quickly and silently, administering a mild pediatric antibiotic and fresh, medicated dressings to the angry red lacerations.
""She has a slight fever from the shock and tissue inflammation,"" Sarah whispered gently, resting a cool palm on Maya’s brow. ""She will sleep through the night. But these scars... they will take a long time to heal, inside and out.""
Elena bowed her head, hot tears finally spilling down her cheeks, washing away the residue of rainwater.
Footsteps approached from the shadows near the back shipping containers. Elena spun around, her spine snapping straight, her fingers curling into fists.
A tall man stepped into the light. He possessed a rugged, weathered countenance, with silver strands woven through his dark hair and a deep scar slicing diagonally across his left cheekbone. He wore a simple dark wool sweater and worn denim, carrying himself with an austere, predatory stillness.
""You look like your father, Elena,"" the man said, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely calm.
Elena stared at him, memory fragments clicking into place like tumblers in a lock. ""Gabriel Cross. You were my father’s business partner. The one Julian accused of embezzling fifty million dollars.""
May you like
""Julian framed me,"" Gabriel replied without bitterness, as though stating a simple fact of nature. ""He used forged signatures and corrupted digital logs to send me to a maximum-security facility while he consolidated control over your father's firm and, eventually, married you. But tonight, the truth stops running.""
Gabriel reached into his pocket and placed a sleek, modern smartphone on the table in front of Elena. ""Your husband is on the line right now. He thinks he's calling the chief of police. He doesn't know the police frequencies in this sector have been redirected to this handset.""
