Chapter 2 - The Red Ledger

Elena seized the momentary hesitation. Without waiting for Julian’s reaction, she pushed past Marcus into the private study and locked the mahogany double doors behind her. Setting Maya gently onto the velvet settee, Elena retrieved the emergency medical kit from behind the bookshelf.
""Breathe, darling. Mommy has you. Nobody will ever touch you again,"" Elena murmured, her hands steadying as she dipped sterile gauze into antiseptic. When she pulled aside the torn fabric of Maya’s cotton pajama top, the reality of the brutality made her stomach churn. Severe, crosshatched welts stretched across the child’s pale shoulder blades, blooming with dark purple hematomas. With infinite gentleness, she dressed the wounds, her soul hardening with every quiet whimper Maya uttered.
While Maya drifted into an exhausted, feverish daze, Elena moved swiftly toward Julian’s desk. She knew the passcode to his personal terminal—dates he considered sacred, which were invariably the milestones of his hedge fund rather than their anniversaries. The desktop flared to life.
Elena had not intended to look through his corporate files tonight, but Marcus’s panicked words echoed in her ears. She inserted a blank thumb drive, opening the root directories where Julian stored his private correspondence. What she found was far worse than an affair. A hidden partition labeled Project Elysium contained encrypted wire transfers totaling tens of millions of dollars, funneled through offshore shell companies. Among the recipient files was a signed document from Victoria Vance, granting her a majority share of a private real estate trust funded entirely by Elena’s late father’s estate.
Elena gasped, clutching the edge of the mahogany desk. Julian had not merely brought a mistress into their home; he had methodically liquidated her family’s legacy while poisoning the child who was supposed to inherit it.

Suddenly, the heavy door shuddered under a thunderous blow. The brass hinges strained under Julian’s brute force from the other side. ""Open the door, Elena! You take one step out of this room with my daughter, and you will leave with nothing—no money, no custody, and no name!""
Elena pulled the flash drive from the port. Just as the wood around the lock splintered, her personal phone buzzed violently on the desk. The incoming text was from an unknown, untraceable number: If you run through the front door, his drivers will take the child. Check the floor safe beneath the Persian rug.
