Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

The engine of the speedboat rumbled with a deep, throaty growl, its vibration shaking through the fiberglass hull. Rain pounded furiously on Marcus’s leather jacket above them. His finger tightened visibly on the curved trigger of his rifle.
""Marcus, please,"" Elena pleaded, stepping squarely in front of Clara and Maya. She looked into the eyes of the man who had driven her family to school recitals and charity galas for over four years. ""You watched Maya grow up. You taught her how to ride a bicycle on our driveway. Are you really going to murder us for a man who doesn't even know the names of your children?""
Marcus’s jaw twitched. The barrel of the weapon wavered by a mere fraction of an inch. ""Mr. Vance pays for my mother’s specialized nursing home, Mrs. Vance. If I fail him, she is out on the street tomorrow morning. This is business. Please, don't make me pull this trigger.""
""Julian Vance doesn't pay for your mother's care, Marcus,"" Elena fired back, her voice ringing clear over the roar of the ocean swell. ""My father's private medical trust pays for it. Julian hasn't signed a single charitable disbursement since he took the helm. Look at the ledger yourself! Check who authorized the payments every month!""
Marcus froze, his brow furrowing beneath the rain-soaked rim of his tactical cap. Confusion, then dawning horror flashed across his face. He lowered the rifle slightly.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the tunnel entrance behind Marcus. Gabriel appeared like a phantom from the shadows, bruised, bleeding from a superficial graze along his temple, but entirely lethal. Before Marcus could swivel his weapon, Gabriel tackled him against the rusted iron railing.
The rifle flew from Marcus’s hands, tumbling into the churning, dark water below. The two men wrestled violently against the slick metal platform, their boots slipping on the wet steel. Marcus broke free, drawing a combat knife from his tactical vest, his eyes wide with desperate survival instincts.
""Gabriel!"" Elena screamed.
Gabriel sidestepped a brutal slash, caught Marcus by the wrist, and twisted it with terrifying, mechanical precision. The knife clattered to the deck. With a swift shove, Gabriel sent Marcus crashing into the metal wall, pinning him by the throat.

""You have a choice, Marcus,"" Gabriel hissed into the guard's ear. ""Die for a man whose empire falls at nine a.m., or get into this damn boat and help us finish him.""
Marcus gasped for breath, his eyes darting between Gabriel’s lethal grip and the terrified face of little Maya peeking out from beneath the woolen blanket. Slowly, deliberately, Marcus let his arms fall limp to his sides. ""The keys to his private offshore server vault... are in the glove compartment of my SUV. But Julian isn't alone. He called in his father’s old associates.""
