Chapter 13 - The Zurich Ledger

The black sedan remained parked beneath the hospital window, its engine idling with a low, predatory hum. Marcus stood beside Julian, peering through the blinds. The vehicle bore diplomatic plates from a Central European consulate, its sleek silhouette out of place against the humble backdrop of the mountain town.

""They won't wait for the trial,"" Julian whispered, his voice trembling. He pulled his knees toward his chest, looking smaller than his seventeen years. ""My father borrowed fifty million euros from Aegis to purchase the European stallion lines. He used our entire family estate—including the title to the Championship arena—as collateral. If I sign the conservatorship papers, they will come for me next.""

""You're not signing anything,"" Marcus said firmly, resting a heavy hand on the boy's shoulder. Despite the boy's past mistakes, Marcus saw the terrified child beneath the equestrian uniform. ""You saved Mia’s life when you pulled that antidote from the lab. That pays your debt to the Vance family. From here on, you stay under my protection.""

""You can't protect me from these people, Mr. Vance,"" Julian choked out. ""They don't hire thugs with crowbars. They own judges, shipping ports, and private security armies. They operate like ghosts.""

Sarah entered the room, locking the door behind her with a soft click. ""The hospital administrator just received an official transfer request. A team of private medical transport contractors arrived at the main desk with an injunction claiming custody of Julian as an orphaned ward of the state.""

""Donald's lawyers?"" Marcus asked, his jaw tightening.

""Worse,"" Sarah answered, showing her phone screen displaying a scanned corporate document bearing a red wax seal. ""Aegis Bloodstock filed emergency guardianship based on a corporate indemnity clause Donald signed two years ago. They have legal authority to remove him from the premises.""

Marcus looked over at Mia, who was watching them with wide, perceptive eyes. ""Pack her things,"" Marcus told Sarah quietly. ""We're not using the front elevators.""

""Where can we go?"" Julian asked, his voice bordering on panic. ""They have surveillance on every highway leading out of the county.""

""We go into the old mines beneath the Vance pasture,"" Marcus replied, checking the hallway through the door peephole. ""Tunnels my grandfather dug eighty years ago. No satellite can see through four hundred feet of granite.""
