Chapter 4 - The Ambush at Timber Creek

The crash of heavy timber shattered the side window of the ambulance cab. Marcus reached behind the driver’s seat, grabbing the heavy tire iron kept in the door well. Rain lashed through the shattered glass, drenching his face as he kicked the driver’s side door outward with full force.

The heavy door struck the first assailant square in the chest, sending him sprawling into the muddy ditch. Marcus leaped into the downpour, swinging the steel iron in a sweeping arc. The second attacker lunged with a pipe, but Marcus ducked beneath the blow, driving his shoulder into the man’s ribs and driving him hard against the ambulance hood.

""Who sent you?"" Marcus roared over the deafening storm.

The man gagged on blood and mud, refusing to answer. From behind, the third man swung a crowbar toward Marcus’s temple. A sharp crack echoed through the forest—not of metal hitting bone, but the deafening report of a flare gun. The third attacker dropped his weapon, screaming as a blinding red phosphor ball struck his waterproof jacket, lighting the rain-slick road in brilliant crimson fire.

Sarah stood at the rear doors of the vehicle, the smoking flare tube still raised in her gloved hands. ""Get inside! Now!""

Marcus hauled himself back into the passenger compartment, slamming the armored doors shut. The driver threw the vehicle into reverse, the tires churning violently through the gravel until finding purchase on the narrow shoulder. They reversed along the edge of the drop-off, tires spinning inches from the precipice, before turning down an old abandoned logging path that led back toward the rear gates of the Sterling estate.

""The main road is compromised,"" Sarah yelled over the wailing monitors. ""We can't make it to the city hospital in time. Her pulse is thready, Marcus! She has less than forty minutes!""

Marcus wiped the mixture of rain and blood from his forehead, his eyes burning with dangerous resolve. ""Turn around. We're going straight to Donald’s private laboratory.""
