Chapter 15 - The Threshold of War

Silence fell over the deep stone corridor, thick and suffocating. Marcus knelt immediately, pressing Mia gently into Sarah’s arms and guiding them into the alcove of an old timber support beam.
""Stay low and don't make a sound,"" Marcus breathed directly into Sarah’s ear. ""Julian, stay behind her. Give me the drive.""
Julian pressed the cold piece of resin into Marcus’s palm. Marcus slipped it into the lining of his boot, his senses tuning into the darkness. Twenty yards back toward the entrance, the faint hiss of pressurized air-canisters signaled the deployment of tactical smoke. The emerald glow of two night-vision reticles cut through the murk like twin fireflies.
A calm, cultured voice with a light European accent drifted down the shaft, echoing strangely off the damp stone walls.
""Marcus Vance,"" the voice said, measured and completely devoid of aggression. ""My name is Victor Vane. I represent the governing board of Aegis Bloodstock. We have no interest in your family land, nor do we harbor any ill will regarding the unfortunate events surrounding your daughter.""
Marcus remained silent, his fingers closing around an iron rail spike resting half-buried in the shale floor.
""Donald Sterling was an undisciplined asset,"" Victor continued, his slow, deliberate footsteps crunching steadily over the loose gravel. ""His debts are voided by his arrest. However, the data capsule currently in young Julian’s possession belongs exclusively to our consortium. Return the boy and the capsule, and your daughter will live to see tomorrow's sunrise in complete peace.""
The emerald reticle swung across the stone ceiling, creeping closer to the alcove where Sarah held Mia close against her chest.
""And if I refuse?"" Marcus’s voice cut through the dark, cold and sharp as fractured flint.
Victor stopped walking. A soft, chilling chuckle resonated through the tunnel. ""Then the blue toxin you witnessed in that riding boot will be remembered as an act of mercy compared to what we unleash upon this valley.""
High above them, a sudden detonation rocked the mountain, shaking loose boulders from the ceiling as dust rained down over the darkened corridor. The entrance behind Victor had been sealed by a secondary breach team, cutting off all retreat.

Marcus rose slowly to his feet, iron spike gripped tightly in his bleeding hand, stepping squarely into the path of the encroaching green beam.
""Then let's see what you've got,"" Marcus whispered into the dark."
