Chapter 15 - The Unopened Letter

One month later, the demolition excavators tore into the southern wing of the Mitchell manor, smashing the grand marble fireplaces, the gilded moldings, and the velvet-draped windows into dust. Ava stood on the front lawn in simple denim jeans and a warm woolen sweater, watching the house that had been her prison crumble to the ground. The cold shadow that had hung over the valley for generations was finally lifting.

Christian walked up beside her, holding a small metal safety-deposit box that had been recovered from beneath the library's foundation stones during the preliminary excavation. ""The demo crew found this in a hidden compartment beneath Julian’s old desk,"" Christian said, handing her a small brass key. ""It wasn't listed on any of the manifests.""

Ava’s fingers trembled slightly as she unlocked the box. Inside was a black velvet ring box containing Julian’s wedding band, a bundle of letters she had written him while they were dating, and an unsealed envelope marked with a date: The night before the crash.

Ava sat on the hood of Christian's car, the autumn wind tugging at her hair as she unfolded the heavy parchment.

My darling Ava,

If everything goes right tomorrow, Eleanor will be arrested, the foundation will be audited, and we will finally be free. I’ve booked two one-way tickets to an island off the coast of Maine under our new names. I bought a small cottage with a garden by the sea—the kind you always sketched in your notebook.

I know how much pain my family has caused you. I know the scars will take time to heal. But wherever you are, whatever happens to me, remember this: you are stronger than any shadow they cast over you. Live a full life, Ava. Love again. Build something beautiful from the ashes.

I will be watching over you in every sunrise.

May you like

Yours for eternity, Julian.

Ava pressed the letter against her heart, closing her eyes as a tear slipped down her cheek, warm and cleansing. When she opened her eyes, she looked past the dust of the falling mansion, out toward the horizon where the sun was breaking through the autumn clouds, golden and infinite. For the first time in her life, she took a breath that was entirely her own."
