Chapter 7 - The Voice from the Past

Inside the vault was a spartan room illuminated by cold LED strips. There was no gold, no stacks of cash, and no bearer bonds. Instead, shelves lined the walls, filled with meticulous rows of labeled binders, backup hard drives, and legal transcripts. On a small metal desk in the center rested a solitary digital audio recorder and a sealed manila envelope labeled: FOR AVA.

Ava’s knees gave out, and she caught herself on the edge of the desk. Seeing Julian’s handwriting—the elegant, slanted script that had written her love notes during their brief, turbulent marriage—shattered the emotional numbness she had clung to for survival. She collapsed into the chair, tears spilling freely down her cheeks as she pulled the envelope toward her.

""I’ll give you a moment,"" Christian said quietly, stepping back toward the vault door to keep watch with Maya.

Ava broke the wax seal on the envelope. Inside was a single page and a small key card. She unfolded the paper:

Ava,

If you are reading this, it means my worst fears came true. It means I couldn't stop the monster who gave me life before she destroyed ours. I am so sorry for bringing you into this den of wolves. I thought I could shield you, but Eleanor’s greed has no bottom. In this room is every transaction, every forged signature, and every bribe she ever paid through our family name. But more importantly, there is a recording. Listen to it. It will tell you the truth about the night our lives ended.

I love you, forever and beyond.

Julian.

Trembling, Ava reached for the digital audio recorder on the desk. She pressed play. A burst of static filled the room, followed by the muffled sound of rain and the purr of a car engine. Then came Julian’s voice, tight with panic:

May you like

""Vance, if you get this, I’m being followed. It’s not Barnes. It’s Marcus. He’s driving Eleanor’s Mercedes. He ran me off the bridge once already. The brakes aren't responding... Vance, tell Ava I—""

The recording abruptly cut off with the violent crunch of metal, glass shattering, and the roaring roar of an explosion.
