Chapter 14 - Ash and Awakening

Two weeks later, the morning sun rose warm and brilliant over the Mitchell estate, but the oppressive darkness that had haunted the property for years had vanished. The gates stood open. The sprawling grounds were quiet, save for the gentle rustling of oak leaves in the autumn breeze.
In the hospital courtyard across town, Christian Vance sat in a wheelchair, his arm in a sling and bandages wrapped around his ribs, but his eyes were clear and bright. Ava walked beside him, carrying a bouquet of white lilies.
""The doctors say you’ll make a full recovery,"" Ava said, smiling softly as she sat on the stone bench across from him. ""Maya said you managed to take down two of Marcus’s men before the tactical unit arrived at the hangar.""
""I made a promise to Julian,"" Christian replied, a faint smile touching his worn face. ""I wasn't about to break it. And Marcus?""
""He took a plea deal,"" Ava said, her voice steady. ""He agreed to testify against Eleanor in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table. Eleanor’s trial begins in November, but her lawyers are already trying to negotiate a life sentence without parole. She won't ever see the outside of a federal penitentiary again.""
Christian looked at Ava, studying the transformation. The terrified, emaciated girl he had rescued from that silk bed was gone. In her place stood a woman who had walked through the fires of hell and reclaimed her soul.
""What will you do with the estate, Ava? The legal paperwork is finalized. The trusts, the assets, the land—it's all yours now. Over eighty million dollars.""

Ava looked out over the hospital gardens, watching a young family laughing on a bench in the distance. ""I’m tearing that house down, Christian. Every single brick. I’m going to build a rehabilitation and shelter center for victims of domestic violence and abuse in Julian's name.""
Christian nodded slowly, his eyes shining with profound respect. ""Julian would have loved that more than anything.""
