Chapter 6 - The Hangar Vault

Discharging Ava from the hospital was executed like a covert military extraction. Maya provided an oversized coat, dark sunglasses, and a scarf to conceal the bandage on Ava’s forehead. Instead of taking the front elevators, Christian led her down through the hospital’s basement service tunnels, exiting into an underground loading bay where an unmarked black SUV waited with tinted windows.

They drove north, away from the glittering skyline and toward the industrial airstrips on the outskirts of the county. The rainy weather matched the mood inside the vehicle; wipers swept rhythmically across the windshield as Ava clutched the small silver key Christian had given her.

""Julian bought Hangar 14 through an anonymous trust three years ago,"" Christian explained, watching the rearview mirror for tailing vehicles. ""Eleanor never knew about it. To her, Julian was just a dutiful son running the family real estate empire. She never suspected he had built an entire parallel infrastructure to protect himself from her.""

The SUV pulled into the perimeter of a desolate airfield surrounded by chain-link fences and rusted floodlights. Christian entered a passcode at the gate, driving straight up to a weathered corrugated steel building. Inside, the hangar was vast, dusty, and mostly empty, save for a covered classic sports car and a reinforced steel security vault installed against the rear concrete wall.

Ava stepped out of the vehicle, her legs still feeling weak. Christian guided her toward the vault, pointing to a dual-locking mechanism: a mechanical keyhole and a biometric fingerprint pad.

""This is why Julian gave me the key,"" Christian said softly. ""He told me that if anything happened to him, only the two of us together could open this door. He trusted me to protect you, and he trusted you to finish what he started.""

Ava slid the silver key into the mechanical cylinder. It turned with a satisfying, heavy click. Then, with a trembling finger, she pressed her thumb against the green optical scanner. The vault hissed as pneumatic seals disengaged, the heavy steel door swinging outward to reveal Julian’s final sanctuary.
