Chapter 10 - The Golden Cage

The Cardenas estate was placed under maximum security lockdown following the incident at Pier 42. Within forty-eight hours, Marcus was in federal custody, facing dozens of charges ranging from kidnapping to corporate sabotage and corporate embezzlement. The press camped outside the wrought-iron gates of the estate, hungry for details on the miraculous return of the Cardenas heiress.
Inside the sprawling penthouse, however, an uneasy quiet reigned.
Mia had fallen asleep in the master suite, exhausted after two days of thorough medical evaluations. A pediatric trauma specialist assured Gabriel that physically, the girl was unharmed, though the psychological scars would take months of gentle therapy to heal.
Clara stood in the penthouse kitchen, pouring hot water into a porcelain teapot. She was no longer wearing the blue maid's uniform; Gabriel had ordered his staff to clear out her quarters and moved her into the luxurious guest wing. She wore a soft gray sweater and jeans, yet she had never felt more like an outsider.
""You don't belong in the kitchen anymore,"" a deep voice said from the doorway.
Clara turned to see Gabriel leaning against the archway. He had changed into a clean black dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the faint scars of past scuffles. The dark circles under his eyes remained, but the dead, hollow emptiness that had haunted him for three years was gone, replaced by a fierce, protective focus.
""Old habits, Mr. Cardenas,"" she said quietly, setting down the kettle.
Gabriel walked across the kitchen, stopping just a foot away from her. ""I told you to call me Gabriel.""
""Things are complicated now, Gabriel,"" she replied, looking away from his intense gaze. ""Marcus is in prison. Mia is home. My brother’s death has been officially reopened as a homicide investigation thanks to your lawyers. I have no reason to be here.""
Gabriel’s jaw tightened. He reached out, his warm fingers gently grasping her chin and turning her face back toward his. ""You think your only purpose here was to settle a score?""
Clara’s breath caught in her throat. ""What else could it be?""
""You kept me alive, Clara. Not just at the docks, but every night you stayed in this miserable house while I was drowning in grief,"" he murmured, his thumb lightly stroking her cheek. ""I don't let people in. I never have. But I cannot let you walk out that door.""

Clara stared into his dark eyes, feeling the dangerous pull between them. But the secret she had kept since the shipyard was eating away at her conscience.
""Gabriel... there's something you need to know about the man who broke into your study,"" she whispered, stepping back from his touch. ""He didn't work for Marcus.""
