Chapter 2 - The Whisper in the Dark

Clara did not flinch, though the cold dread coiled tightly in her stomach. Gabriel’s shadow fell over her, intimidating and suffocating in the dim ambient light of the penthouse. Outside, lightning flashed across the city, casting sharp, skeletal silhouettes against the marble floor.

""You're mistaken, Mr. Cardenas,"" Clara said, maintaining unbroken eye contact. ""I don't have access to your personal terminal. I don't even possess the clearance code for the study wing.""

""Clearance codes can be bought,"" Gabriel said coldly, stepping even closer until she could smell the amber warmth of scotch on his breath. ""Or stolen. And right now, four years of confidential shipping manifests regarding the Mediterranean line are sitting in an external cloud drive, routed through an IP registered to your staff quarters.""

Clara took a slow step backward until her heels touched the edge of the low bookshelf. ""If I were stealing from you, would I be standing here tucking a blanket around your shoulders? Would I risk waking a man whose reputation terrifies every worker in this city?""

Gabriel stared at her, his jaw clenching tightly. A flicker of doubt crossed his guarded expression. For months, he had watched her navigate the vast, empty corridors of the penthouse. She moved like a phantom—never intruding, never speaking out of turn, yet always appearing at the precise moment his despair threatened to swallow him whole. When the nightmares woke him screaming, she was downstairs brewing herbal tea. When he drank until sunrise, she silently removed the broken glasses before he cut his feet.

""People do strange things when they are desperate,"" Gabriel muttered, reaching behind him to pick up his phone from the table. ""Julian is waiting downstairs with security. If you have nothing to hide, you will let him search your room.""

""Search whatever you want,"" Clara replied, her voice ringing clear in the hollow room. ""I have nothing.""

Gabriel dialed a single digit on the keypad. Before he could raise the receiver to his ear, the heavy oak doors at the end of the corridor slammed open. The frantic footsteps of Julian, his personal aide, echoed down the marble hallway. Julian arrived out of breath, his tie askew, holding a tablet with a blinking red alert.

""Gabriel,"" Julian gasped, ignoring Clara's presence entirely. ""We have a problem. It wasn't Clara.""

Gabriel frowned, lowering the phone. ""What are you talking about?""

Julian turned the screen toward Gabriel, his hands shaking slightly. ""The breach didn't originate from her quarters. It was bounced from the guest wing. Victor’s old room. Someone accessed the interior terminal using a fingerprint that has been inactive for three years.""

Clara watched Gabriel’s face drain of all color. The name hung in the air like a phantom, suffocating the room.

May you like

""That's impossible,"" Gabriel whispered, his voice cracking with sudden terror. ""Victor died in that car.""

""Then you need to see this,"" Julian said grimly, tapping the tablet. ""The camera in the private elevator just registered a manual override from the ground floor.""
