Chapter 12 - A House Divided

The silence in the kitchen was suffocating. Outside, the night sky was clear, the storm having passed, leaving the penthouse bathed in cold, indifferent starlight.

""You killed my brother,"" Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a terrifying register of utter stillness. ""You held his daughter in your arms at his funeral and swore to protect her.""

""I did protect her!"" Julian shouted, his composure finally cracking. ""I kept Marcus from harming a hair on her head for three years! She was living comfortably in a private villa in Switzerland until Marcus grew greedy and tracked her down. I had to orchestrate tonight to eliminate Marcus permanently and clear the board!""

""By putting a bullet in my head?"" Gabriel demanded, taking a step forward, completely disregarding the gun barrel pointed at his chest.

""Don't move, Gabriel!"" Julian warned, his hand trembling as he cocked the hammer. ""If you step forward, I will fire. The narrative is already written: Marcus’s surviving loyalists broke in to finish the job. You died defending your home. I assume legal guardianship of Mia, take control of the family trust, and the Cardenas name remains invincible.""

Clara watched Julian’s body language carefully. He was stressed, operating on adrenaline and guilt. His attention was hyper-focused on Gabriel. Slowly, silently, Clara slid her hand along the kitchen counter, wrapping her fingers around the polished wooden handle of a heavy carving knife resting in the butcher block.

""You'll never get away with it, Julian,"" Clara spoke up, deliberately drawing his gaze. ""The police have the communications logs from the pier. They know Marcus had an inside partner in the Cardenas executive suite.""

Julian flicked his eyes toward her, annoyance flaring in his gaze. ""A low-class maid whose brother died in a gutter? No one will listen to your testimony once you're floating in the harbor beside him.""

That split-second distraction was all Gabriel needed.

With blinding speed, Gabriel closed the distance, slapping Julian’s gun arm upward. The gun fired with a muffled thwip, the bullet tearing into the ceiling cabinetry. Gabriel drove his shoulder into Julian’s chest, slamming him against the refrigerator.

Julian fought back with desperate ferocity, using his uninjured elbow to strike Gabriel across the cheek. Gabriel stumbled back, blood dripping from his nose, but refused to go down. Julian recovered his weapon, raising it once more—

Thunk.

Julian froze. His eyes widened in absolute shock as he looked down at his shoulder. Clara had thrown the heavy porcelain teapot with astonishing force, shattering it across his collarbone, followed instantly by a sweeping kick to his knee.

Julian buckled, and Gabriel delivered a devastating right hook that sent Julian crashing unconscious to the floor, the gun sliding across the tiles into the hallway.

Gabriel stood panting, his knuckles bloody, looking down at his best friend. He dropped to his knees, utterly hollowed out by the betrayal. Clara knelt beside him, gently placing a hand on his trembling back.

""Gabriel,"" she whispered softly. ""It's over now. The truth is out.""

He slowly turned his head to look at her, his eyes shining with unshed tears. ""Everyone I ever trusted was a lie.""

""Not everyone,"" she whispered back.
