Chapter 14 - The Rebuilding

Six months later, the penthouse looked unrecognizable. The sterile, cold atmosphere of black leather and empty glass had been replaced with warmth, potted plants, vibrant art, and the cheerful clutter of a seven-year-old child's toys.

Cardenas Maritime was undergoing a total restructuring. Gabriel had publicly dismantled the offshore accounts, severed all ties with paramilitary contractors, and redirected forty percent of corporate profits into a maritime workers' welfare foundation named after Clara’s late brother, David.

Clara stood on the private terrace, leaning against the stone balustrade, enjoying the warm breeze of a late summer evening. She wore a tailored emerald dress, her hair pinned up loosely, exuding an effortless elegance that matched the estate far better than her old uniform ever had. She was currently directing the foundation's community outreach programs, proving herself to be an astute and compassionate leader.

Two small arms wrapped around her waist from behind. ""Clara! Look what Uncle Gabe bought me!""

Clara smiled down as Mia ran past, proudly holding up a golden retriever puppy that was squirming with excitement.

""Mia, did you let that dog run across the Persian rugs?"" Clara scolded gently, though her eyes danced with laughter.

""Uncle Gabe said it was fine!"" Mia shouted back, giggling as the puppy licked her nose, before running back into the gallery.

A pair of strong arms slipped around Clara’s waist, pulling her back against a broad, familiar chest. Gabriel rested his chin on her shoulder, inhaling the sweet scent of her jasmine perfume.

""You're spoiling her,"" Clara murmured, leaning back into his embrace and covering his hands with hers.

""She deserves to be spoiled,"" Gabriel replied softly, pressing a kiss to the side of her neck. ""And so do you.""

Clara turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around the lapels of his jacket. He looked healthy, vibrant, the shadows beneath his eyes completely erased by joy and purpose. ""Have you reviewed the foundation's maritime reports for the quarter?""

""I couldn't care less about shipping reports right now,"" he whispered, gazing down at her lips. ""I only care about tonight.""

Tonight was the annual Cardenas Gala, the grand event marking the company’s re-emergence into high society. It would be their first formal public appearance as a couple. Clara felt a nervous flutter in her stomach.

""The press will have questions, Gabriel,"" she noted quietly. ""They still talk about how a former maid became the director of your charity foundation.""

""Let them talk,"" Gabriel said with fierce pride. ""They don't know that without that 'maid', the Cardenas empire would be six feet underground. You are the strongest person I know, Clara.""

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, clicking it open. Inside rested an antique platinum ring set with a brilliant, tear-shaped diamond.

May you like

Clara gasped, covering her mouth as tears instantly sprang to her eyes.

""Clara Bennett,"" Gabriel said, dropping to one knee on the terrace under the setting sun. ""You brought light back into a dead man's heart. Will you marry me?""
