Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Promise

""Yes,"" Clara breathed, tears spilling down her cheeks as she pulled Gabriel up from his knee. ""Yes, of course I will!""
Gabriel slipped the ring onto her finger, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around on the terrace as the puppy barked excitedly from the doorway and Mia clapped her hands with sheer delight. When he set her down, he kissed her with an overwhelming passion that made the world fade into insignificance.
An hour later, they arrived at the Grand Metropolitan Hotel for the gala. Flashbulbs exploded like a thunderstorm as their limousine pulled up to the red carpet. Reporters shouted Gabriel’s name, cameras jostling for position.
Gabriel stepped out first, immaculate in a black tuxedo. He turned and offered his hand to Clara. She stepped out, radiant in her emerald gown, her head held high, the diamond sparkling on her finger. Gabriel didn't just escort her; he kept her tucked securely against his side, his arm firmly around her waist, publicly declaring her place in his world.
As they entered the grand ballroom, the murmurs of high society fell silent, replaced by genuine applause. Gabriel guided her to the center of the dance floor as the orchestra began playing a slow, sweeping waltz.
They moved together with effortless grace, their eyes locked, communicating a profound understanding that no one else in the room could ever comprehend. They had survived blood, fire, betrayal, and grief; they had rebuilt a shattered family out of the ashes.
""A penny for your thoughts, future Mrs. Cardenas,"" Gabriel whispered, a tender smile curving his lips as he guided her through a graceful turn.
""I was just thinking about that stormy night six months ago,"" Clara admitted softly, resting her cheek against his chest. ""When you woke up on that leather chair and glared at me like you wanted to throw me out of the window.""
Gabriel chuckled softly, pulling her closer against him. ""I was terrified of you, Clara.""
""Terrified of a maid?"" she teased.
""Terrified that you were the only person in the world who could see right through my armor,"" he replied, his voice thick with emotion. ""And terrified that I was already falling for you.""
As the song came to an end, Gabriel leaned down and kissed her beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers, the applause of hundreds echoing around them like thunder. Clara smiled against his lips, knowing that the cold, lonely nights were finally over.

Across the bustling ballroom, standing near the shadows of the mezzanine balcony, a tall waiter in an immaculate tuxedo adjusted his white ear-piece. He raised a small, concealed digital camera, zooming in directly on Clara's joyful face, his cold eyes unblinking.
He keyed his microphone and spoke in a crisp European accent: ""Target is secured beside Cardenas. She has no idea her brother is still alive."""
