SHATTERED CHAINS OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Matriarch's Gambit

Julian stared at the monitor in utter disbelief. Eleanor Vance—the frail, grieving widow who had wept at Claire's disappearance, who had funded search parties and pleaded on television—stood before the safe room door with the cold efficiency of a battlefield commander.

""Did you really believe..."" Marcus wheezed, sliding down the blood-smeared wall, ""that I had the offshore connections to hire ex-commandos? I’m an accountant, Julian. I balance ledgers.""

Julian kicked Marcus’s functional leg, pinning him down with a heavy boot against his chest. ""Why? Claire is her own daughter.""

""Claire was a liability,"" Marcus rasped, wiping blood from his broken jaw. ""She found the shell corporations Eleanor set up thirty years ago. My father didn't gamble away our family's fortune, Julian. Eleanor stole it. She bled my family dry to build your father’s empire, and now she’s liquidating the assets before the federal auditors freeze the offshore accounts.""

A sudden sound of cutting metal echoed from the library corridor—the high-pitched whine of the plasma torch slicing through the safe room’s three-inch titanium bolts.

Julian didn't hesitate. He stripped Marcus of his sidearm, took the zip-ties from his own tactical belt, and bound his brother-in-law's wrists behind his back around the iron balustrade of the staircase.

""If Lily is harmed,"" Julian whispered into Marcus's ear, ""there is nowhere on this earth she will be able to hide you.""

Julian sprinted down the north corridor, keeping low, the carbine tucked tightly against his shoulder. He checked his magazine: twenty rounds left.

As he turned the corner into the library foyer, he saw two private security operatives standing guard, armed with submachine guns. Beyond them, Eleanor stood watching the sparks rain down from the vault door, her expression serenely vacant.

""Eleanor!"" Julian shouted, stepping into the open, rifle leveled. ""Step away from the door, or I drop your men where they stand.""

The two mercenaries raised their weapons instantly, but Eleanor raised a single, gloved hand, commanding them to hold.

She turned slowly, her silver hair perfectly coiffed despite the violence tearing through the estate. ""Julian, darling,"" she said softly, as if greeting him at a Sunday brunch. ""Put the gun down. You’re making an absolute mess of the house.""
