Chapter 6 - The Architect of Ruin

Julian pulled Claire up, feeling the tremor in her limbs. She was free of the explosive, but she could barely stand. He guided her into the adjoining bathroom, opening the narrow access hatch inside the linen closet that led to the service crawlway.
""Stay here until you hear my voice,"" Julian whispered, his face inches from hers. ""If anyone else opens this door, pull this pin."" He pressed a captured fragmentation grenade into her trembling palms, closing her fingers tightly around the spoon.
Claire stared at the weapon, then met his gaze with fierce clarity. ""End this, Julian. He won't stop until we are all buried.""
Julian shut the hatch, picked up the carbine, and stepped back into the smoked-filled nursery. His white shirt was blackened with soot, his coat torn, his knuckles split and bleeding. He checked the magazine: twenty-eight rounds.
He descended the grand staircase with absolute silence. The ground floor was eerily calm, the rain outside pounding against the reinforced walls. The air in the mansion was growing cold as the wind swept through the shattered skylight.
At the end of the long portrait gallery, the doors to Julian's private study stood ajar. A warm, amber light spilled out onto the dark parquet floor.
Julian stepped through the threshold, rifle raised to his shoulder.
Marcus sat behind Julian's antique desk, pouring himself a measure of twenty-year-old single malt scotch from Julian's crystal decanter. His bespoke jacket was discarded on the leather chair, revealing a tactical shoulder holster. On the desk in front of him sat a military-grade remote detonator, wired to an array of thermal charges positioned on the wall directly behind him.
That wall shared its structure with the library safe room.
""Put the rifle down, Julian,"" Marcus said smoothly, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. ""You pull that trigger, my finger relaxes off this dead-man pressure pad. The library safe room becomes a crematorium before my body hits the rug.""
Julian didn't lower the barrel. His sights remained centered squarely between Marcus's eyes. ""Where did you get the private security contractors, Marcus? A hedge fund manager doesn't hire ex-special forces without a backer.""

Marcus smiled, a cold, empty grin that showed too many teeth. ""You think this was about your money? Look around you, Julian. This entire dynasty was built on blood your father stole from mine. I'm just taking back the interest.""
Marcus tapped the glass on the desk. ""Now, throw the rifle across the room. We're going to negotiate the transfer of the foreign accounts.""
