Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The silence stretched like a drawn bowstring. Outside, lightning fractured the sky, throwing stark, skeletal shadows across the wood-paneled walls.
Marcus let out a ragged breath, the arrogance finally peeling away to reveal the desperate predator beneath. ""You’re bluffing. You’d never gamble your daughter's life.""
""I’m not gambling,"" Julian replied, his voice devoid of all warmth. ""I know you. You’re a coward, Marcus. You hire killers because you can't bear the kickback of a rifle. You lock women in basements because you can't face them in daylight. You won't blow that wall, because the moment you do, your leverage dies, and I tear your throat out with my bare hands.""
Marcus's eyes darted toward the carbine on the floor, measuring the distance. Julian didn't move. He remained perfectly still, a coiled predator waiting for the slightest misstep.
Slowly, Marcus reached for his satellite phone with his left hand, tapping a single key on the speed dial. ""Team One. Stand down. Fall back to the secondary extraction point.""
A brief crackle answered over the line, followed by the acknowledgment of the team leader. Marcus lowered the phone, fixing Julian with a murderous stare. ""Now. Unlock the box.""
Julian leaned forward, extending his hand toward the steel container. His fingers traced the edge of the matte surface, finding the small recessed notch near the bottom casing. ""Claire isn't here to provide the retinal scan, Marcus. But she didn't need to.""
Marcus frowned, his grip on the detonator tightening. ""What are you talking about?""
""She changed the override three months ago, the moment she realized you were siphoning company funds,"" Julian said softly.
He pressed his thumb against the hidden biometric scanner concealed beneath the baseplate. The box chimed with a clean, electronic ring. The magnetic seals hissed open, the lid rising smoothly on hydraulic hinges.
Inside sat no bearer bonds, no hard drives, and no encrypted routing numbers.
Sitting in the custom foam cutout was a single, high-capacity military radio frequency receiver, linked directly to the mansion's main breaker panel—and currently pulsing with a bright amber diode.
""What is this?"" Marcus demanded, jumping up from the chair.
May you like
""It's the remote circuit breaker for the estate's fire suppression system,"" Julian said.
Before Marcus could depress the detonator button, high-pressure halogen gas erupted from the ceiling vents with a deafening roar, flooding the room with dense, suffocating fog and blowing the detonator's wireless frequency into scrambled static.
