Chapter 13 - The Crushing Tide

The reinforced copper conduit ruptured under the point-blank impacts. Ten thousand gallons of pressurized reserve water blasted through the ceiling in an explosive cascade, hitting Eleanor with the force of a battering ram.
The impact knocked the silver pistol clean from Eleanor's grip, sending her sprawling across the slick, flooded marble. Julian moved like lightning, surging through the deluge to kick the gun far out of reach into the flooded stacks of the library.
He reached into the vault, scooping Lily into his arms with one massive sweep. The little girl buried her face in his neck, screaming and clutching him with terrifying strength.
""I have you, baby. I have you,"" Julian whispered, backing out into the hallway as Claire joined them, wrapping her arms around both of them under the roaring torrent of water.
Behind them, Eleanor struggled to her feet in the knee-deep water, her immaculate silver hair plastered against her face, her coat ruined and heavy. She looked like a drowned wraith, spitting curses and coughing up water.
""You fools!"" she screamed through the roar of the deluge. ""The perimeter is locked! My convoy is outside! You will never leave this valley alive!""
As if answering her threat, the heavy plate-glass windows along the southern conservatory shattered inward.
A squad of eight tactical operators in unmarked black uniforms swarmed through the breach, their weapon lights piercing the gloom. But they didn't aim at Julian. They moved with mechanical efficiency, fanning out across the foyer and securing the exits with brutal precision.
Behind them walked a tall, weathered man in an immaculate dark trench coat, flashing a federal badge pinned to his lapel.
""Eleanor Vance,"" Special Agent Harris called out, his deep voice carrying over the rushing water. ""Federal Bureau of Investigation. Step away from the safe room with your hands visible.""
Eleanor froze, her face draining of what little color remained. ""Harris...? No. You work for the regional director. The director is on our board.""
""The director was arrested twenty minutes ago at Dulles Airport,"" Harris said coldly, signaling his agents forward. ""Your brother-in-law Marcus started talking the second we cut the estate’s satellite relay.""
Two agents clamped heavy steel cuffs onto Eleanor's wrists, dragging her out of the floodwaters. She didn't look at Claire or Julian as she was hauled away; her eyes remained fixed on the destroyed library, watching the remnants of her financial dynasty dissolve in water and mud.
Harris approached Julian, looking at the bruised family clinging to one another. ""Medical teams are in the driveway, Mr. Vance. It's safe.""
May you like
Julian lowered Lily into Claire's arms, nodding slowly. ""Thank you, Agent Harris.""
""Don't thank me yet,"" Harris murmured, looking down at the tablet in his hands, his expression darkening. ""We ran the serial numbers on the private convoy that breached your gates ten minutes ago.""
