Chapter 2 - Blind Shadows

Darkness swallowed the room whole. In the suffocating black, the sound of movement was immediate and sharp. Julian lunged blind, his hands locking around Claire's waist while throwing his torso over Lily.
""Officer down!"" Miller shouted from the doorway, followed by the dull thud of body armor slamming against hardwood. A suppressed gunshot coughed in the corridor—a discreet, muffled pop that sent concrete dust spraying into the room.
Julian felt Claire shivering beneath him. ""Stay down,"" he commanded in a low, gravelly tone, his pulse hammering against his temples. He reached into his coat, pulling his tactical flashlight and clicking the tail-switch.
The narrow beam of white light sliced through the darkness, illuminating floating dust and streaks of fresh blood on the floor near the doorway. Officer Miller lay on his side in the hallway, groaning as he clutched a shattered knee. The two guards who had restrained Marcus were nowhere in sight. Marcus himself was gone, leaving behind only his torn silk necktie discarded on the marble.
""Julian..."" Claire coughed weakly, squinting against the harsh glare. Her skin felt icy. ""The basement service stairs. He knows the blind spots.""
""I'm not leaving you,"" Julian snapped, snapping the remaining zip-ties from her ankles with his pocket knife. ""Lily, hold your mother's hand. Do not let go, no matter what you hear.""
Lily nodded vigorously, her tear-stained face pale under the LED beam. She clamped both small hands around Claire's wrist. Julian scooped his wife into his arms, feeling how dangerously light she had become during her weeks of captivity.
As they stepped into the corridor, the mansion's backup generators hummed to life, bathing the hallway in a ghastly red emergency glow. A digital keypad beside the corridor elevator beeped once, signaling an override from the master suite upstairs.

Through the intercom speaker overhead, Marcus’s voice crackled through the quiet estate, distorted and dripping with contempt. ""You think you won by cutting one chain, Julian? Look at your wrist.""
Julian froze, casting the light down to Claire’s left arm. Clamped around her wrist beneath her torn sleeve was a small, blinking digital transceiver, its red LED pulsing in sync with an electronic countdown.
