Chapter 14 - The Final Account

The rear door of the limousine opened, and an armed man held an umbrella over Vivienne as she stepped out into the storm. She held the silver revolver down by her side, looking at Julian with clinical disdain. "A touching rescue, Julian," she called out over the sound of thunder. "Too bad it ends right here on the pavement."
Julian stood in front of his SUV, shielding the passenger door with his body. Blood dripped from his torn fingers onto the asphalt. "The authorities have the flash drive, Vivienne. Marcus managed to upload the entire transaction history to the federal prosecutor before you shot him. It’s over."

Vivienne’s cold facade cracked for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening. "Then I have nothing left to lose, do I?" She raised the weapon, pointing it directly at Julian’s face. Elena watched from the rear window, her hand pressing against the glass, horror freezing the air in her throat. Julian had lied, he had concealed monsters, but he was standing between her and death without hesitation.
"Shoot me," Julian said, his voice deadly calm, echoing against the storm. "Let her go, and take your revenge on me. But if you touch her, you won't live to see the dawn either." A flash of lightning illuminated the highway, and in that split second, the metallic click of a hammer cocking broke the standoff.
