Chapter 5 - Whispers of Treason

The contents of the envelope spilled across the white bed linen: a series of high-resolution surveillance photographs and a bank transaction sheet stamped with a Swiss offshore seal. Elena’s heart seized in her chest. The photos captured Julian sitting at an outdoor café, sliding a black briefcase across the table to an impeccably dressed, shadowed figure.
Elena leafed through the pages with shaking hands. The dates on the bottom of the pictures matched the exact weekend she had miscarried their first child eighteen months prior—the weekend Julian had tearfully claimed he was trapped at an international summit in Tokyo. The timestamps didn't lie; he had been less than three miles away from the hospital where she had wept alone.

"Elena, stop looking at that," Clara urged, trying to pull the papers away. "Your pressure is climbing again." But Elena gripped them tightly, her nails tearing the edges of the glossy prints. On the final page was a handwritten note scrawled in slanted, elegant cursive: He didn't miss your grief, Elena. He financed it.
The room seemed to spin violently around her. Bile rose in her throat as the horrific puzzle pieces began to twist into place. Why had Julian insisted on taking over all her medical prescriptions? Why had her health deteriorated so rapidly during those months? Before she could voice the question, the door swung open, and Julian marched in, his hair plastered with rain and a look of wild desperation in his eyes.
