Chapter 7 - A Fractured Sanctuary

By midnight, Julian had been escorted from the floor by private security, his protests echoing down the quiet medical wings before fading into silence. Elena lay awake in the dim ward, the rhythmic monitor ticking beside her like a countdown timer. Clara had fallen asleep on the pull-out armchair, her gentle breathing the only sound breaking the heavy quiet.
Elena stared up at the ceiling tiles, counting the dots to keep her mind from splintering. Her thoughts were no longer consumed by grief; survival had taken over. If Julian's enemies were tracking her, staying in this facility was no longer safe. She couldn't afford to lose these babies—not after the abyss she had dragged herself out of over the last year.

She changed out of the patient gown into the spare sweatpants and sweater Clara had packed, biting her lip to suppress a gasp as dizziness washed over her.
She picked up her phone to disable the location tracking, but an alert popped up on her home security system. Three internal motion sensors in their suburban home had just been triggered simultaneously. Julian wasn't at his hotel or his office. He had gone back to their house, and according to the surveillance feed, he wasn't alone.
