Chapter 3 - Broken Porcelain

Upstairs in the penthouse, the silence was shattered by the shrill, persistent ringing of the landline on the kitchen wall—a dedicated private line that only Julian’s legal counsel and executive board possessed. Julian stared at the phone for three rings before crossing the kitchen in long, deliberate strides. He pressed the speaker button.

""Julian, do not speak, just listen,"" hissed the frantic voice of Arthur Vance, his family’s primary attorney for over two decades. ""Turn off your personal devices immediately. Federal agents are in the lobby of the tower. They have a seizure order for the servers and a warrant for your detention.""

Julian’s brow furrowed, his grip on the edge of the quartz counter tightening so hard his knuckles turned stark white. ""What are you talking about, Arthur? I haven’t signed a financial disbursement in three days. Detention for what?""

""Corporate espionage, wire fraud, and treasonous misappropriation of defense infrastructure algorithms,"" Arthur rattled off, his breathing labored as sirens wailed faintly in the background of the call. ""Someone uploaded the classified schematics to an offshore repository an hour ago. The authorization came directly from your private terminal inside the penthouse.""

Julian felt the room tilt. His gaze darted from the flashing speakerphone back to Maya’s abandoned tablet lying open on the island. The screen was still glowing softly with the notification: Exit_Strategy_Final_Draft.pdf.

""Arthur... that’s impossible. I haven't logged into the terminal since yesterday morning.""

""The IP address originates from your living room, Julian! And worse—the compliance log shows the access keys were countersigned by Maya Lin. Did she have your dual-authentication token?""

Julian didn't answer. His mind violently flashed back to twenty minutes ago: Maya standing by the refrigerator, her hands shaking, her breath shallow, her off-white satin suit rustling as she recoiled from his shouting. He had accused her of infidelity. He had screamed about late hours, clandestine phone calls, and secret meetings. She had looked at him with sheer, unadulterated contempt, calling him a lunatic before ripping off her engagement ring.

Was it an act? Julian thought, a sudden, suffocating nausea rising in his throat. Was the fury, the tears, the heartbreak... all just a theatrical diversion to give her time to escape before the feds kicked in the doors?

""Julian! Are you there?"" Arthur’s voice cracked through the small speaker. ""Get out of that building right now. If they find you with that terminal—""

The call was abruptly cut off by a sharp electronic beep. The high-end, computerized lighting system throughout the penthouse flickered once, twice, and then plummeted into pitch blackness.

A second later, the backup emergency lights hummed to life, bathing the vast, open-plan apartment in a surreal, blood-red glow. Across the room, the heavy steel security lock on the private elevator entrance disengaged with a loud, mechanical thud. Julian turned around, his back against the granite counter, watching the polished elevator doors slowly slide open into the crimson dark.
