Chapter 7 - The Edge of the Pier

The interior of the sedan suddenly felt as cold and suffocating as a submerged coffin. Maya pulled her hand back violently from Marcus’s grasp, her shoulder slamming against the passenger door. The titanium key fob glinted mockingly between his fingers before he smoothly tucked it back into his coat pocket.

""You,"" Maya breathed, her voice barely audible over the roaring rain hammering the metal roof. ""It was you the entire time.""

Marcus didn’t deny it. He didn't sneer or offer a dramatic villainous smirk; his face remained completely deadpan, the face of a corporate operative executing a standard balance sheet adjustment. He reached toward the glove compartment, his movement casual yet deliberate.

""Julian is a brilliant software architect, Maya, but he is an emotional toddler,"" Marcus said evenly. ""He’s brilliant at math, but predictably fragile with women. It took me six weeks of carefully placed whispers and fabricated calendar invites to turn him into the raving maniac you had to endure tonight in that kitchen.""

""Why?"" Maya demanded, her fingers subtly feeling behind her for the mechanical door handle. ""Horizon Capital gave you everything. Julian trusted you like a brother!""

""Horizon Capital is a civilian facade built over military grade algorithmic weapons,"" Marcus replied, pulling a compact black automatic pistol from the glove compartment and resting it casually on his thigh. ""The offshore consortium I represent is paying four hundred million dollars for the defensive routing codes. Julian would never sell. His moral compass is far too delicate. But you... you are the perfect scapegoat.""

""Nobody will believe I stole it!"" she spat, tears of pure fury burning behind her eyes. ""I don’t even have a technical background in military software!""

""You don't need one. The public loves a story about a greedy, scorned fiancee who sold corporate secrets to the highest bidder before trying to flee the country,"" Marcus said, glancing out his driver-side window toward the dark silhouette of the warehouse ahead. ""And when the police find your body washed up near the jetty tomorrow morning with a single bullet wound and a ticket to Zurich in your pocket, Julian will be arrested for your murder and the system breach simultaneously. Case closed. The narrative is flawless.""

May you like

Maya didn't hesitate. She didn't scream or beg. With every ounce of strength remaining in her body, she yanked the door handle and threw all her weight against the heavy car door.

The door flew open into the howling storm. Maya tumbled outward, her bare shoulder and hip crashing hard onto the slick, wet gravel of the pier. Pain exploded across her side, but adrenaline surged through her veins like fire. She scrambled to her feet, kicking off her silver heels, and sprinted blindly into the maze of towering shipping containers, her bare feet tearing against the jagged stones as the dark rain swallowed her whole.
