Chapter 9 - The Impact

The roar of the SUV’s engine was an apocalyptic sound in the narrow metal corridor. Marcus reacted with the lightning reflexes of a trained operative, throwing himself sideways against the corrugated wall of a container just as the vehicle slammed into the space he had occupied a fraction of a second before. The SUV's heavy steel bull-bar scraped along the steel container with a deafening screech of grinding metal, spraying a shower of white-hot sparks through the torrential rain before skidding to an abrupt, violent halt in the mud.
The driver’s side door kicked open instantly. Julian vaulted out into the downpour, his Kimber .45 raised in a two-handed combat grip.
""Maya, down!"" Julian bellowed.
Maya flattened herself into the icy sludge beneath the wooden pallet, wrapping her arms over her head. Marcus had rolled across the wet gravel and was already recovering his stance, his pistol firing blindly toward the vehicle. A heavy caliber round shattered the SUV’s side mirror into a thousand fragments, another punching a clean hole through the driver's window frame.
Julian returned fire without flinching, advancing through the blinding spray of his own headlights. Three shots barked in rapid, rhythmic succession. One slug caught Marcus in the left shoulder, spinning him violently against the blue container wall. Marcus grunted in pain, his weapon dropping into the dark water below. Realizing he had lost the tactical advantage, Marcus didn't stay to fight; he clutched his bleeding shoulder, scrambled around the corner of the adjacent container stack, and vanished into the labyrinthine shadows of the pier.
Julian didn't pursue him. He dropped his weapon to his side, his entire body shaking with a mixture of raw fury and paralyzing relief. He spun toward the puddle by the pallet.
""Maya!""
He dropped to his knees in the mud, completely disregarding the filth and water soaking his dress trousers. He reached down, his trembling hands lifting her up by her shoulders. Maya looked up at him, her face unrecognizable under a mask of mud, rain, and blood from a gash on her temple. Her eyes were wide, frantic, darting wildly as if still trying to determine if he was her savior or her executioner.
""Julian..."" she whispered, her teeth chattering so violently she could barely articulate the syllables.

""I’m here. I’m right here,"" Julian choked out, his voice breaking completely. The arrogant, controlling tech mogul who had slammed his fist against the kitchen cabinet an hour ago was entirely gone; in his place was a man shattered by his own blindness. ""I know everything, Maya. I saw the terminal logs. I saw what Kane did. I'm sorry... God, I'm so sorry.""
Maya looked at him, the rain streaming between their faces. But before she could speak, the distinct, distant wail of multiple approaching sirens pierced through the sound of the storm, rapidly converging on the front gates of Pier 42.
