Chapter 6 - Crimson Shadows

Julian moved through the service stairwell like a ghost, his burgundy shirt now stained with soot, plaster dust, and a thin line of dark blood from a flying glass shard that had nicked his cheek. He had managed to neutralize the second operative in the master hallway, using the apartment's smart home system to trigger a localized blackout that allowed him to flank the man from behind. But there was no victory in it. The penthouse was ruined, the floor littered with spent casings and broken memories, and the clock was mercilessly running out.
He had retrieved the mercenary’s secure radio, pocketing it alongside the cushion-cut diamond ring, which he had slipped into his front trousers pocket. The sharp facets pressed into his thigh with every hurried step he took down the concrete stairs.
Julian emerged into the secondary basement exit, avoiding the main parking garage where he knew federal teams or more hostile elements would be lying in wait. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his secondary personal phone, an encrypted satellite unit kept hidden inside the wall safe of the service landing. He powered it on.
Within four seconds, three messages pinged the inbox. All three were from Arthur Vance.
Message 1: Federal agents are entering the penthouse. Julian, answer!
Message 2: The warrant was fast-tracked by a civilian contractor named Marcus Kane. Do not trust internal security.
Message 3: Marcus Kane was on site at Pier 42 forty minutes ago using Maya's credentials. It’s an extraction setup. She is the leverage.
Julian’s vision narrowed to a pinpoint of burning rage. Marcus Kane. The head of their internal forensic unit, a man Julian himself had personally vetted, hired, and given unconditional clearance to audit every facet of the company’s infrastructure. Kane was the one who had quietly dropped hints over the past month about Maya’s ""unusual behavior,"" subtly pointing out late-night server queries and unexplained schedule changes. Kane had systematically poisoned Julian’s mind with paranoia, setting the stage so Julian would explode in jealousy the moment the trap sprang.
""I gave him the rope,"" Julian whispered aloud, his voice rough and savage in the hollow stairwell. ""And I hung her with it.""
He didn't wait. He kicked open the heavy emergency exit leading to the alleyway behind the residential high-rise. The rain struck his face like cold needles. He sprinted toward a nondescript dark gray SUV parked two blocks away—an emergency bug-out vehicle known only to him.

He slid behind the wheel, engaged the ignition, and brought the dashboard navigation to life. Pier 42 was seven miles south along the riverfront. If Marcus had taken Maya there, she wasn’t being protected. She was being positioned as the sole scapegoat to be found dead at the scene of the breach.
Julian slammed his foot on the accelerator, tires shrieking against the wet asphalt as he tore into the stormy night.
