Chapter 10 - The Silk and the Steel

The transformation was absolute.
Elena stood before the full-length gilded mirror in her suite, barely recognizing the reflection staring back at her. The dress was an architectural masterpiece of midnight blue silk that pooled at her feet, backless to accommodate her healing wounds without pressure, yet cutting high at the neckline with sharp elegance. Her auburn hair had been swept up into an intricate chignon, held in place by diamond pins that caught the chandelier light like trapped stars.
Around her neck rested the Vane heirloom: a choker of black diamonds flanking an oval sapphire that burned like cold fire against her pale skin.
A soft knock preceded Viktor’s entrance.
He paused at the threshold, his breath visibly catching in his chest. Viktor wore a bespoke black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt, his broad shoulders and commanding height giving him the air of an ancient warlord disguised in modern luxury. His dark hair was slicked back, the serpent tattoo partially hidden beneath the stiff silk of his collar.
He walked toward her slowly, his obsidian eyes sweeping over her from head to toe, undisguised hunger flaring behind his usual stoic mask.
""You look..."" Viktor began, his voice surprisingly rough. He stopped behind her, their eyes meeting in the mirror. ""...magnificent.""
""I feel like a target dressed in silk,"" Elena replied, though a faint flush rose to her cheeks under the intensity of his gaze.
""A target that carries teeth,"" Viktor murmured. He reached into his coat and produced a slender, flat object made of matte black titanium. He knelt before her, his hands sliding gently beneath the hem of her gown to strap a lightweight leather sheath around her right thigh.
Elena’s breath hitched as his scarred fingers grazed her bare skin, warm and firm. ""I thought you said weapons were forbidden.""
Viktor stood up, smoothing his jacket, his dark eyes gleaming with quiet malice. ""Weapons are forbidden for guests. I do not consider myself a guest."" He tucked a small, razor-sharp stiletto into the sheath, letting the heavy silk fall smoothly back over her leg. ""If Dante speaks to you, do not lower your eyes. If he touches you, I will sever his hand before the music ends.""
Elena looked up into his fierce, unyielding gaze. ""Why are you doing this, Viktor? It’s not just about protecting Leo, is it?""
Viktor stepped closer, until his chest brushed the silk of her bodice. He reached out, his thumb gently grazing her lower lip, his touch sending a sharp, intoxicating jolt straight to her heart.

""Leo was the reason you entered my house,"" Viktor whispered, his voice vibrating deep in his throat. ""You are the reason I will burn this city to the ground before I let anyone take you from it.""
He offered his arm. Elena took a deep breath, wrapped her fingers around his solid forearm, and allowed the king of shadows to escort her into the lions' den.
