Chapter 15 - The Claiming of the Queen

The narrow subterranean hallway fell into a silence broken only by the crackle of burning wiring and Leo’s muffled sobs.

Viktor stood tall, blood dripping steadily from his wounded forearm onto the polished concrete. He didn't look at the gun pointed at his chest. His eyes were locked on Dante with the terrifying calm of an executioner awaiting the drop of the blade.

""Let the boy go, Dante,"" Viktor said softly. ""This is between you and me.""

""It was never between you and me, Viktor,"" Dante sneered, thumbing back the hammer of the revolver. ""It was about the blood. And Maria’s blood ends tonight.""

Dante began to pull the trigger.

Elena didn't hesitate. Reaching behind her back, her fingers closed around the matte black handle of the titanium stiletto Viktor had placed back in her thigh sheath during the car ride. With a desperate, furious cry, she lunged forward, thrusting the blade with all her strength into the gap of Dante’s ballistic vest, driving it deep into his side.

Dante choked on a scream of agony, his shot going wild and shattering the concrete ceiling above. He swung around, his backhand striking Elena across the face, sending her crashing against the steel wall.

""You miserable bitch!"" Dante snarled, raising the gun toward her.

He never finished the movement.

Viktor closed the distance like a collapsing star. His hands caught Dante’s skull, twisting with savage, merciless finality. A loud, sickening crack echoed through the vault, and Dante Silvano dropped lifeless to the floor like a sack of stones.

The two remaining mercenaries dropped their weapons, falling to their knees with hands raised, utterly broken by the display of pure carnage.

""Kill them,"" Viktor commanded coldly as Marcus and his backup team finally breached the corridor.

Viktor didn't look at the bodies. He moved directly to Elena, who was slumped against the wall, bleeding from a split lip. He dropped to his knees, his trembling, blood-stained hands cupping her face with a desperation that shattered his cold facade completely.

""Elena,"" he breathed, his voice cracking. ""Look at me. Are you whole?""

Elena looked up through her tears, her chest heaving. ""Leo... is he safe?""

Leo came running into her lap, burying his head against her torn silk dress, wailing in relief. Elena wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his hair, while Viktor leaned forward, encircling both of them in his massive, bruised arms, resting his forehead against Elena’s temple.

For a long moment, the three of them remained locked together amid the smoke, blood, and ruins of the fallen syndicate.

""It’s over,"" Elena whispered, looking up into Viktor’s dark, intense eyes. ""Dante is dead. Leo is safe. You have your empire back.""

Viktor’s fingers slid through her tangled auburn hair, tilting her chin until she could look nowhere except into the depths of his obsidian gaze. The ruthless mobster had vanished; in his place was a man entirely, hopelessly bound.

""My empire means nothing without you in it,"" Viktor murmured, his voice thick with raw, undisputed possession. ""You did not just save my son, Elena. You saved me from the dark. You are never leaving this house.""

He leaned down and pressed his lips against hers, a kiss born of blood, fire, and unconditional claiming that stole whatever breath she had left. Elena clutched his shirt, yielding to the dark tide of his world.

When he finally pulled back, resting his hand over hers on Leo’s shoulder, a faint smile touched Viktor’s scarred lips.

""Welcome to the Vane family, Elena. Now... let us show the world who its new masters are."""
