Chapter 6 - The Broken Perimeter

Elena looked down at the crisp white pages of the contract, the numbers in black ink representing more wealth than her family had generated in five generations. Yet to her, it looked like a gilded arrest warrant.
""You speak as if I have a choice,"" Elena said, her eyes flashing with defiance. ""Ten million dollars, bodyguards, a gilded cage... you aren't protecting me, Viktor. You're claiming me.""
Viktor didn't deny it. His jaw tightened, the serpent tattoo on his neck shifting with the flex of his throat. ""In my world, Elena, to be unprotected is to be dead. If claiming you keeps a bullet from your skull, then consider yourself claimed.""
Before she could respond, an ear-splitting alarm shattered the quiet of the estate.
A piercing siren wailed through hidden speakers in the ceiling, followed immediately by the dull, bone-rattling boom of an explosion from the eastern gatehouse. The reinforced glass windows rattled violently in their frames.
The three suited men instantly dropped their briefcases and drew Glock handguns from inside their jackets. Viktor pulled a customized black 1911 from a shoulder holster beneath his tailored coat, his movements fluid, devoid of panic.
""Containment protocol Delta,"" Viktor ordered into a radio pinned to his lapel. ""Lock down the southern wing. Evacuate Leo to the bunker.""
""Copy, boss,"" a static-filled voice crackled back. ""They hit the perimeter with heavy explosives. Multiple vehicles breaching the lawn!""
Elena’s heart leaped into her throat. ""Leo! Where is the library?""
Viktor grabbed her wrist with an iron grip, pulling her behind him as glass shattered in the far corridor. ""Marcus has him. You stay with me.""
""He’s just a child!"" she cried out, trying to pull away. ""I promised him I’d be here!""
Viktor looked down at her, his eyes ablaze with lethal intensity. ""And I promised to keep you alive. Move!""
Automatic gunfire erupted inside the manor. The sharp, deafening chatter of submachine guns tore through the antique gallery, followed by the crash of splintering wood and falling crystal chandeliers. Heavy boots stamped down the polished hallways.
Viktor moved with terrifying precision. Stepping around a corner into the grand gallery, he fired three consecutive rounds without slowing down. Three masked men in tactical gear collapsed instantly onto the Persian runner, dark crimson soaking into the woven silk. Elena suppressed a scream, pressing her back against the wall, her hands trembling.
This was Viktor Vane in his natural element: a creature of absolute violence, completely devoid of remorse, carving a path of destruction with clinical efficiency.
""This way,"" Viktor hissed, dragging her down a service corridor toward the private elevator.
Suddenly, a concussive blast blew the service door off its hinges. The shockwave threw Elena against the wall, knocking the wind from her lungs. Viktor caught the brunt of the flying debris, stumbling but remaining on his feet. Through the billowing gray smoke stepped a tall, scarred man wearing a heavy ballistic vest, an assault rifle raised directly at Viktor’s chest.

""Vane,"" the man snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""Silvano sends his regards.""
Elena didn't think. Driven by pure instinct, she grabbed a heavy brass candelabra from a shattered display case beside her and hurled it with all her strength at the gunman’s face.
